eek, it makes you wonder what exactly happens when Sayid doesn't think with his gun, that makes him side with Ben and go on a revenge spree....Sayid must be able to prevent some tragedy and doesn't. Does he even go back to the isle from the freighter?

This part of the exchange between Ben and Sayid at the end of the episode is interesting. I know we've discussed it, but I think it pays to looks at the exact wording of the exchange. (I'm not sure if thus was posted earlier, so flame away if it was.)

BEN: Why are you crying? Because it hurts? Or because you were stupid enough to care for her? These people don't deserve our sympathies. Need I remind you what they did the last time you thought with your heart instead of your gun?

SAYID: You used that to recruit me into killing for you.

BEN: Do you want to protect your friends or not, Sayid? I have another name for you.

Good call! And I think the black eye was his right eye - same eye that he held the black backgammon piece up to....same side where he has the scratch over his eye/face.

"There are two sides: A dark side, and a light side" and he held one of the pieces on each side of his face and the camera froze there; it kindof looked like they were saying Locke had a dark side and a light side.

Sure good and evil often depend on the viewpoint of participants and what groups they represent. If you're going to consider Locke offing Naomi with a knife between the shoulder blades or putting a live hand grenade in Miles mouth as residing in a shade of gray then the same should apply to Ben, Jack, Sayid, and even Widmore. The point is that Darth Vader is probably a similar tragic character as Locke. Darth Vader did "bad" things in order to further "good" things, at least how he saw the ends justifying the means (even though blowing up a planet is more than Locke has done but who knows if Locke and the island have a similar power to destroy the Earth?). In the end Darthy Boy turns on the Emporer and helps to save the galaxy and ends up sharing n-dimensional ghost space with Obi Wan. I only mentioned this because the producers mentioned the homage aspect in the enhanced episode.

So Locke setting the trap for Miles, Sayid, and Kate was an homage to the Star Wars movie where Lando gave up the good guys to Darth Vader in the Cloud City. Nice. So does that make Locke Darth Vader? Locke has gone over to the dark side but will eventually earn redemption in the end?

I'm wondering how much planning and cross-referencing it takes to keep all of these literary/historic references in check for each episode and for the storyline of the entire show. Honestly, it must take a hell of a long time to intertwine all of this in such a complicated way. Of course, viewers probably "read into" some references that were unintentional, but I agree, it's quite complicated. I enjoy the references, but I don't understand how it's constantly kept at this high level. It seems almost impossible to me.,
