The unfortunate thing about eTexts, which you learn fairly quickly in college, is that if you want to make notes about specific quotes, you have to print out the pages you need. It quickly turns out that just buying the book is cheaper than having it on a computer and printing from there. That plus many people just cannot read whole chapters in academia on a computer screen.

Many university/college level electronic textbooks are available for downloading but until every student has a computer (and internet connection), few schools/school districts will put them on the secondary reading lists. Chips are not needed... just a download link.

etexts are great because they can be quickly updated and never need repair but you don't get to read the rude remarks written by previous students.

My niece's school required clear backpacks two years...

Are you aware we NEED oxygen to survive and the more trees cut down, grassy meadows covered in asphalt reduce the amount of oxygen in the world???

Textbook companies would never stand for computer chip books. I'm sure they have a pretty evil network of spies watching out for their interests. And a brother in law on every school board.

I've never seen them or heard of them, but that is great if they are around, 1 lightweight reusable folder and lots of tiny chips to insert would be awesome and if it has been created they should be pushing them so more people know about them.

So my kid is starting high school this year and they are only allowed to carry their books in clear backpacks.

And if she brings her field hockey clothes/equipment in a non clear bag, it must be dropped off in a special room where it will be locked up until after school.

Is this common in public schools?
