Men tend to be competitive towards each other, while women tend to be collaborative. I believe this is instinctive behavior that is shrouded in all kinds of social issues.

Have you ever worked in an office??? Women will claw each others' eyes out and hold grudges until the day they die. Men can yell at each other one day and the next day be best buds.

From age 0-2 an infant only interacts with other adults, so the parents want other adults to not treat their child in gendered ways. So what? I doubt they could or would keep up the secret once the child is school aged. Anyone read the Baby X story? It's fiction from 1972 but basically covers this idea. Quick excerpt:

I think it can work out Ok. By schoolage I think Pop will have decided which gender he/she prefers.

Look at what toys a child plays with. Girls play with dolls. Boys play with cars. If Pop has access to both kinds of toys, a preference can probably be detected pretty soon. Pop gets to choose the clothes for each day, so a preference there will also manifest itself when the kid is ready.

huh. My parents told me the same thing, that it was just something that was expected, but that was only after I started a discussion about how I just don't understand why people have kids in the first place. Don't they have better things to do?

Anyway, for this article, I don't think it will fuck up the kid. It isn't anything like the Joan/John case where the kid was forced into a gender. This swiss kid is being allowed to choose whatever gender it wants...

The kid's going to be confused and a cross-dresser. If he/she doesn't have the gender bit sorted out by school age I could see there being a huge issue for him/her at school. How are they supposed to know which bathroom to use? If they pick the wrong one then it'll be glaringly obvious when other kids are in there too. I feel bad for the kid and yeah, kids shouldn't be their parents' experiment. And this...
