National Society of Film Critics named There Will Be Blood Best Picture of the Year.

No Country for Old Men is still the huge frontrunner, though. Into the Wild and Juno are picking up steam. Atonement is dropping, as audiences here don't seem to be embracing it.

Fuck Johnny Depp. I'm so over that washed-out typecasted "actor." He and Helena Bonham Carter both. They are the reason I am merely apathetic about Sweeney Todd. I'm tired of people fawning over Johnny Depp. He's not that great, people!

Agreed. JUST GIVE DEPP A FRIGGIN OSCAR DAMMIT. It's about TIME. I dont care if he's worse than Keanu Reeves in Sweeney Todd, he deserves it just cuz he's Johnny Depp!

The trailer for it didn't look like anything I would like, and as far as DDL, it was like he was playing that same character again from "Gangs of NY" which I didn't like either. Johnny Depp better win everything this year or else.

I need to move. 80% of these movies don't even play anywhere near me. It sucks, and now that the video rental place closed, it sucks even more.

i'm sure you already know this, but netflix delivers everywhere. and it kicks ass! every year i add all the major nominees to my queue, unless they come back into the theater. I highly recommend it.

It's based on Upton Sinclair's novel "Oil!". It stars Daniel Day Lewis as an oil prospector who strikes it rich.

I've been deliberately avoiding early reviews of this movie because I don't want to be spoiled, but from what I understand it's a very dark movie and Lewis' character is a very bad dude.

It's supposedly even more gritty than NCFOM, which is saying a lot.

No surprise that Atonement got the most GG nominations of any film. It's a very British movie.

I expect it to do well at the Globes and get shut out at the Oscars (especially since it will be up against two very American movies -- No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood).

The Golden Globe nominations came out this morning. Many of the films talked about in this thread have been nominated. since the GG's are a good indication of what at least gets nominated at the Oscars, it will be interesting to see how they stack up in the other award shows.

Atonement will probably get a Best Picture nomination, but I don't see it winning. It hasn't been getting stellar reviews over here, and has been shut out of the precursor awards so far.

It feels like this year's Cold Mountain/Memoirs of a Geisha.

Okay, and I must add that I LOVED Julie Christie in 'Away From Her'. This film came out earlier in the year but I do see her as a big challenge for Best Actress. A very realistic and touching movie too.

Best Picture is becoming a tight race. I'd say the only locks are No Country for Old Men and TWBB, and probably Atonement. Sweeney Todd, Juno, Into the Wild are all contenders. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, a French film, is a stronger contender than some of those.

Actor- Day-Lewis and Depp of course. With all the critic love recently, maybe Clooney is a semi-lock.

Actress- Unfortunately, I think Julie Christie has this won already. Cotillard really deserves it....

Is it ever too early to talk about Oscars?

They've announced the 15 documentarys that will be in competition for the feature length Documentary Oscar. I'm put in a synopsis of each where I could find it. No surprise, its a very political year for films! (i.e. close this thread now, neo-cons.) FIVE of these will go on to get nominated.

You know its a 'serious' year when the most light-hearted of the films up for nomination is a profile...
