where were you when you first heard about the attacks? |

I was in my car driving to work and still thought it was a little commuter plane that had accidently hit. Once I got to work the second tower was hit, the internet was clogged and we had no TV. So I decided to go home. I had just found out I was pregnant with my first child the day before and I was feeling a tad bit emotional about what kind of world my child would be brought into.

i was in pakistan, in my college dorm lounge when the news broke on cnn. it was evening there, and me/my friends were like 'what's this world trade center? is it some famous building?'. And then we shut off the tv and went to have dinner.
by the time we came back the whole dorm lounge was filled with students watching cnn all night long. |

nopes no one was celebrating (i mean, no one was really really really sad etc also because this was happening so far away in some other country, but no one was happy either - kindof like how you would prolly feel if you found out that someone bombed some thirdworld african nation) - the biggest concern among most student's minds were if it would effect their visa applications etc or does it mean that pakistan would get bombed now in retaliation.

Interesting. I have a friend who was in Iran visiting family when it happened. He went to a prayer vigil. You never hear about stuff like that on the news. |

I was in my second period of the day (chemistry) and an announcement came over the intercom saying that a plane had hit the WTC and that we'd be given further news. Went to History and then lunch and when we came back we knew the full extent and all students went to the gym or to the auditorium to watch coverage for the rest of the day.

Can you see that maybe nomi's blase attitude about this might be a little more interesting than hearing about anything you were doing, dhc?

I was oblivious (ignorance is bliss) until my MIL called. I had been watching the news earlier in the morning, but turned it off to get some work done. My first thought was that it was an accident. I turned on the TV just in time to see the first tower fall. |

I had just walked back from taking my kids to school. I remember how blue the sky was that morning, such a crystal clear day. My youngest, then four, was with me. My husband was in New York on the 43rd floor of a building about 10 blocks away from the WTC and he had left a message on the answering machine to turn on the news. I tuned in just in time to see the second plane hit.

Funny, I don't remember the thread title being "Hey nomi, what were you specifically doing on September 11th"

I think that Nomiiiiiiii's reaction seems typical and honest.
At the time, I felt very upset and wanted to help find the terrorists and snap them in two. Today, I feel like the whole mess could have been avoided with the US taking a different position in foreign policy. I am also upset that the US has not spent 2/3 of their war budget on alternative fuel research. It seems like they did exactly what the enemy wanted. |

I was still in bed on my day off in a semi sleeping state. My phone ran with my mom telling me for put on channel 32 right now! It was CNN but she onlys knows them by the numbers. We stayed on the phone for the next hour or so.
The first plane had just hit and they were babbling on about a navigational problem. I was saying "it's terrorists you fools" and as the second plane came I knew I was right. I just sat in front of the tv all day. Fearing the next thing to happen. |

I was in rehearsal when the stage manager broke the news. We went to the theatre office to watch it on television and saw the 2nd plane hit.

I was teaching a college A&P class when a friend paged me to say the WTC had been struck by a plane. I cancelled classes for the day and watched tv in disbelief and some fear.

I woke up and turned on Howard Stern.
At first I thought it was a joke, but it wasn't. So I dashed into my television room to turn on the telly only to have my worst fears confirmed. It was awful. Shock, complete shock. So I called my parents, my Mom was from NYC and we have family there as well, to tell them the news. Horrible, horrible day. |

I was walking to the train station. A woman walking behind me was on her cellphone and was saying, "What, a plane crashed where?". Cynical, jaded New Yorker that I am, I went on my merry way not thinking anything of it. Had I looked up when I got to the train station, I would have seen the tower and the smoke.
When the train got to Fulton Street some women came on saying that a bomb had gone off at the WTC. I contemplated getting off to see what was happening but thought I'd be better off minding my own business. When I got to my office the second plane had just hit. My co-workers were horrified! We were all standing there with our mouths gaped wide open. It was really sad. My fiance Blake was working the area. He's a sgt. in the NYPD and didn't get home till 11pm. I was TERRIFIED! We didn't know if he was dead or alive. When he walked up to the house, my kids and I, my mother, grandmother and aunt all descended upon him. We were hugging him and didn't want to let go. My kids watched it from their windows at school where they had a clear view of the towers. They were horrified. They said that the teachers immediately shut the blinds and tried to reassure the kids that everything was ok. When they heard the fighter jets over NYC they said they were afraid we were all gonna die. My mother went to pick them up at school and brought them home. They sat in front of the TV horrified. I got home from work and turned on the TV to see images of people who jumped to their deaths and couldn't believe that I was watching something that was taking place here in NYC. It seemed like something you watch on the news and think to yourself, "nah....that can never happen here". I was glued to the set for the next two days. A few days later I found out that my friend Doris Torres who worked on the 97th floor at Fiduciary Trust had died after surviving the initial attack. She sustained burns over 80% of her body. She was 32. Another friend of my family's, Roland Pacheco" died at the site. His body was never recovered. He was 25. |

Spanish class, topic was various uses of the subjunctive voice before the full extent of what happened was known
Example from that class: "Did you hear a plane crashed into the building? Let's hope no one was killed" |
