I was at work, on a military base that was understandably on high alert. Information became scarce, even though a few people had access to television and radios. The networks were confused, the news services had pieces and parts of information, but it came at a maddeningly slow trickle that did little to ease my mind. The news web sites were overwhelmed - perhaps once per hour I was able to get to one of them to get a snippet of what was happening. I craved information on what was happening to our nation.
So I came here. I wish I could remember all those who kept us informed, but oberwober, stella urquhart, and Elephant Shoe kept the information flowing as fast as they could get it in the "World Trade Center Destroyed by 2 planes!!" thread. As scottfreek said, "I can't seem to log onto CNN, but SS is keeping me updated..."
A board friend named Don lives in New York and can see the WTC from his office. What about jdd? I know she lives there. Is she OK? There are others, too...MBR comes to mind, as well as others who'd previously outed their RL location. Unfortunately, CNN, Fox, and the over the air networks weren't reporting on these people. See, by this point, they had become no longer just posters - they were human beings who were going through what must have been a horrifying experience. All I wanted to see what jdd saying, "I peed myself a little." I wanted to read one of Don's smart-assed, but kind-hearted comments.
Are they OK?!?
Then dearmelyn came on with this post: "The buildings are buckling" This is how I heard of the impending collapse of the towers that ultimately claimed most of the 3000+ fellow human beings whose lives were claimed by this cowardly act. Then came oberwober's "Another explosion!!! the top has collapsed!!!" 2manchew's "KILL THOSE MOTHER FUCKERS>>>>>>>>> " pretty much summed up my feelings. I go back and read it now and it still sends chills up my spine. The humanity. The humanity.
Of course, there were comments like, "this is fucking pearl harbor shit, you guys! this is like, we're going to war, shit!" Uh...ya think?
That day, there were no squickbats, asshats, fucktards (OK, there was one who inappropriately reveled at the tragedy, if only to make a point), Chews, or PDers. There was no E/ABT, no spoliers, and no pussy edirts. No gays or straights, no liberals or conservatives, no hawks or doves. That day, there were only people who huddled together, trying to make sense of the nonsensical. That day, there was only yuo.
From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank oberwober and stella urquhart for being, essentially, a live news feed to the EZ world that day. I know there were others, but I hung on every post made by these two like no others. It was a day that none of us will ever forget, the proverbial day that will live in infamy for us. I wanted to be at home with my wife and my daughter, but I was here with you, instead. Not by choice; rather, out of necessity. But by being here with you, I saw your humanity, your compassion, your love. You came together that day and we were one family.
I will never forget that day. And because I spent it here, I will also never forget you.
May God bless you all, and may God bless the United States of America.
OK, and if he's got time, Canookia, too.
