It's time to introduce our friend, Mr. Hyphen.
Mr. Hyphen can be very powerful. He can connect words to change their meaning. For example, the words "man eating monkey" describes the process of a human devouring a primate. But let's see what happens when Mr. Hyphen pays a visit. Mr. Hyphen changes the two words, man and eating, into a compound modifier: man-eating. Suddenly, the words "man-eating monkey" describe a primate that devours humans. Isn't it amazing how one little piece of punctuation can make such a big difference? Thank you, Mr. Hyphen. |
