Posts: 4849 (01/15/08 3:30 PM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Have you seen the Geico commercial where the caveman is on the moving walkway, and walking backwards to see the poster on the wall, and since he's walking backwards and the moving sidewalk is going forward, he stays motionless relative to the poster? Here's the question: If an airplane is on a moving runway that is going backwards at the same speed the airplane is going forwards, and they stay constant to one another as the airplane accelerates, will the airplane be able to take off? They are debating this on the radio right now. I can't see how the plane can take off if it's not moving. It seems to me once the airplane gets off the moving runway, it will just die and fall.

The speed the wheels are moving has nothing to do with the plane's capacity to become airborne. And that's really the only thing that's happening if the runway is moving backwards at the same speed. A car going 200 mph up on blocks can't become airborne either.

Standing still by going fast on a runway moving in the opposite direction will not provide the wind needed to lift the airplane.
