I think people will look back at season 5 as the year when AI hit its peak. I think season 6 and season 7 have shown that you need a balance between good talent and entertaining personalities.

Ratings are down from last season (which in turn was down from season 5).

But Season 5 had NEITHER! I loved Season 3 for two reasons: 1. It introduced us to the fabulous Ms Jennifer Hudson 2. That overrated wedding singer Blah-Toya got eliminated before losers like Jasmalien and Di-Bot. |

After seeing Pickler return, I agree that its the combination of talent with personality that makes the show. S6 and S7 have fallen down completely on the back
stories. I want more waitresses with dads in jail and drugstore clerks getting their big break. A sign that people aren't connecting with the Season
will be if the elimination shows get more viewers than the performance shows. That happened S6 and was a good indicator that the tour would flop and there
wouldn't be huge first week sales for the winner(s).

But Season 5 had NEITHER!Right. Taylor, Pickler, Mandisa, Kat Pee, Paris, Chicken Little and Penis With Ears had no personality. As for the talent, i'm just gonna pretend you didn't go there. Elliott. <3 There's nothing that will salvage Season 5 ratings. It doesn't have anything to do about how good a season is, people still lose interest regardless. Just like Survivor, it doesn't matter how good a season is, it's becoming an old show and ratings will decline period, unfortunately. |

This season doesn't have a likeable underdog to root for, someone like Bucky...or even Pickler.
Everyone this season is so polished and professional. I don't care what the rules say, people want to watch talented amateur singers getting their first big break on national TV. Not washed-up professionals and semi-pros looking for another shot at their 15 minutes of fame. |

Seasons 1 and 2 are probably my least favorite actually. I mean, who was good on season one besides Kelly and Tamyra?
And I thought everyone in season 2 sucked except the Kims <3 |

The weird thing about this Season is the minute they leave the show I forget about them completely. I can barely remember anyone voted off so far.

I only remember his name and his goofy vibe though but at least that's something.

This is starting to get on Season 6 levels of "terrible", for me. Every week you had Melinda and Jordin doing great, and the occasional nice LaKisha
performance. Everyone this year's just all over the place. Someone who blew ass in previous weeks and suddenly turns in the best performance of the night
(Michael) just shows how random it is.
The winner's certainly going to be the most inconsistant, at this rate. |

Every week you had Melinda and Jordin doing greatAside from "Hey Baby", "On a Clear Day", "Rhythm is Gonna Get You", "You'll Never Walk Alone", "Livin on a Prayer", "Woman in Love", "She Works Hard for the Money", and "Fighter", which all ranged from mediocre to godawful. For someone who was supposed to be the new Kelly Clarkson, Jordin had a slew of bad performances. This is a boring season but I've been pleasantly surprised by many of the performances over the past few weeks. There wasn't one bad performance last night. That almost never happens. It figures that last night was the night the judges decided to act like everyone was crap. |

Uhm.. say wha???
Last season was the worst season of idol in any country at any given time. And I doubt that it will lose that tile anytime soon if EVER. Think about it .. Apart from Melinda and (to a lesser degree) Jordin and Blake, they had a whole bunch of low-life garbage-pile contestants who had absolutely MINUS1 million chance of breaking the record industry. I mean .. Phil Stacy?? FUCKING SLIGH? Chris Richardson????? BRANDON?????? SANJAYAAA???????????? Hailey *sigh ?? Gina Glocksen??? ... OMFG. |

And they were all entertaining in a trainwreck sort of way. While there isn't a single "Sanjaya" in the bunch this year, they're middle of
the road and apart from Brooke's "Let It Be" or Cook's "Billie Jean", I don't think there's even been an amazing
performance to come out of this season yet.
James, I loved "On A Clear Day", "You'll Never Walk Alone", "She Works Hard For The Money"! "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" and "Fighter" were just okay, but "Woman In Love" and "Livin' On A Prayer" were the only performances I truly dislike. |

I prefer the weeks where most of them are good because there are so few truly great trainwreck performances. The best are those which aren't supposed to be wretched (Jasmine, John Stevens, Amanda's "Carry On My Wayward Son", Josh Gracin, Carmen). Each of the more recent seasons, since AI4 on, has only had a handful of memorable performances. This season I've liked Brooke's "Love is a Battlefield", David Hernandez's "Papa Was a Rolling Stone", Michael's "It's All Wrong But It's All Right", the first performances from Alaina and Alexandrea, etc. I've liked some of the stuff from David Cook and Archuleta but not so much individual performances. |

Ratings update - Where is that ratings thread?
"For the second straight week, the Tuesday edition of "American Idol" slipped to a season low, but that didn't stop Fox from dominating the competition. "Idol" averaged a 9.3 adults 18-49 rating last night, according to Nielsen overnights, off 4 percent from last week's 9.7. It comes as the top 10 finalists get whittled down over the next two months, a time when "Idol" traditionally sees declines. The same pattern occurred last year, although "Idol" is also down 11 percent from the same night last year. Still, "Idol" topped the combined ratings for the other Big Five networks by 33 percent in the 8 p.m. slot, and it helped give "Hell's
Kitchen" its biggest debut ever."

personally, they need a new song book. They sing the same songs season after season. It gets old and boring. between hearing every Whitney song ever recorded,
to numerous versions of Alone and strnge crap we've never heard before, cmon there must be a billion songs out there to choose from. get the permission to
use them and put on a great season.
