This past season wasn't model/actor heavy at all, and it turned out to be a great season. I always find it odd that there's so much bitching and moaning about models and actors, but those are the ones (and the seasons) everyone ohhs and ahhs over no end. Teh groups that bitch and the groups that Oh and Ahs are differnt groups of people.

And not every recruit is recruited because they're mactors or sent there to fill a certain slot, but for their specfic abilites. I posted in a different thread about Ian in Palau. He originally applied to be on The Amazing Race and was recruited for Survivor from his audition tape. I don't think Ian was recruited for his looks or because he fit a brainy/neohippie type, but because in his application it was pointed out that he was an Eagle Scout, and I can recall Survivor was criticized alot at that time for having contestants who knew nothing about how to start a fire, much less work a canoe. So I think he may be one of the only Survivors recruited for what he could do around camp. While I'd like to see more applicants to the show get on, I think part of the problem they're running into is that they're so far into the life of the show that now most of the applications they're getting are people who've applied five, sex, seven, or more times. It's like those terrible singers you see on American Idol auditioning every single year even though they've been turned down five or six times. Sorry, but if you can't get the producers of Survivor to look at you after the first couple of applications, you lack whatever it is they're looking for.

The outcome is someone like Joel booting Mary and Mikey B. Recruits don't go in knowing exactly what to expect, which to me makes Survivor more fun to watch.

Posts: 1031 (04/22/08 6:21 AM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I don't consider anybody who legitimately applied to another reality show but shuffled over to Survivor to be a recruit per se (so Rudy, Ami, Gary, Amy, Ian et cetera). I don't mind recruits as long as the producers actually put some effort into it (and not whatever buff male causes Erika to get an erect penis for this week at any rate). Lazy recruiting = bad, good recruiting = good. Lazy recruiting I'd say are the ones that ultimately don't give shit about the game, even when actually playing the game (Aras being a big one actually) I don't like. Recruits that the produces think will make an interesting game (Fairplay, Penner & Yau Man - heck even some of the early bootee recruits like Sylvia) are okay (heck I am even willing to give a pass at ones that thought would make an interesting game even if they did fall flat once in the elements (ie Ashley - She of the WWE, not she of the Big (natural) Boobies)

I'm sure that there were many contestents on earlier seasons(and the interesting ones on newer seasons) who weren't "real" fans of the show(when you put it in the context of people like us). For example, was Brian Heidik really a fan? Dave Cruser? Matthew? Ethan? Tom Westman? Marquesas Kathy? The list gors on, and that list even includes several winners. Alot of the people who have interesting lives probably don't waste their time watching Survivor. Some do, but most don't

Yet the rest of the cast, though recruited, turned out to be awesome anyway. You know why? Because there were only 16 and we actually got to see all of them (no Marys, Natalies, Briannas, or Morgans). There were two tribes, only six pre-merge episodes, a Jury of seven, no Exile Island, etc. The show was closest to the old format of Survivor that we've come to know and love. In fact, I think the 16-person cast is the main thing here, since most people would agree that EI and China are the best post-ASS seasons, and look what they happen to have in common. So, Survivor needs to go back to 16 people so it can end with some dignity.

Postmerge when the big personalities of Terry + the Crazy Casayas took over editing it was completely forced.Shane's emotional outburst were phony camera whore stunts that work better on something like Big Brother .
