I'm just throwing this out there. I'm sure this isn't right, I'm sure this has probably been thought about before, but it occurred to me ironically during the Survivor finale Sunday and I've been itching to get it out. What if...the island...is Eden? You know, the Garden of Eden. The big 'ole paradise of Christian lore.

I think there's a lot of evidence for this interpretation, as well as explanations for questions we have, if we adopt this idea.

If you start at the beginning, Eden being the place Adam and Eve (Do we all remember that season 1 tidbit in the cave?) are brought into the world to live in supposed paradise. Fast forward past the sin thing and they're banished out of Eden. Does Eden go away? Is Eden a mentality? What if Eden is a place...and that place...moved?

It moved to allow future generations, people who were able to live with the "rules of Eden" to enjoy the perfection and paradise of the island. It keeps people alive who abide by those rules (explaining the ability to cure Rose's cancer, etc) and can kill people who don't (many examples throughout the series.) The smoke monster, the disease, all being methods of the island to enact its will. Why do pregnant people die? Perhaps pregnancy is an act against the island who sees it as a breech of perfection. After all, the revelation of sexuality was what ended Eden to begin with. Maybe in this perfect state that's not allowed.

Now, we know the DI arrived on the island when there were people there. The natives, the people who lived in agreeance with the rules of the island, supposedly immortal (Some of these "time travelers who never seem to age). When the DI realized the properties of the island, the healing properties, for example, and the potential for exploitation, they decided to study it, to eventually use it for their own good. When man became powerful enough to actually do this against the island, technology powerful enough to prevent the island from exacting its will (the pylons that keep the smoke giant out), the island needs help. And calls on certain people who are more aware, more perceptive of the call of the island. Ben, Locke, Walt, one would assume. Through these people, the island exacts its will not unlike the smoke monster, illness, etc. Ben helped the island by wiping out the DI and became the leader of the Others who were now, essentially, the people who were living in accordance to the rules of the island.

But...they weren't. Perhaps Ben didn't fully understand, or agree with the rules. Including the reason Juliet was brought there. Childbirth and the problems surrounding it. So slowly Ben lost the connection to the island because he himself began to break the rules. Lust for Juliet, perhaps being the chief rule break. (Yes, I know this sounds ridiculous prudish and sex doesn't go against the rules of the Bible, under marriage. But perhaps, in Eden, it does? AGAIN, after all, sexuality was the primary loss of innocence for Adam and Eve.)

The ability to move Eden, the island, clearly is a last resort. But something that had been done before. It moves when necessary, a "reset" so to speak, and it's clearly time for another one. As for time travel, the relationship with the dead, all of which can be worked into the interpretation. Maybe the magnetism required to move the island distorts time allowing for traveling between two points. Maybe the island just has that power as a means to protect itself. Maybe the dead are able to project their consciousness on the island because it's closer to God. Whatever the case, it's possible under this interpretation.

Essentially, I think if the Island is in fact the "Garden of Eden," the price for paradise, immortality, and perfection is a set of rules that are incredibly difficult to following leading to many people falling out of the grace of the island and having to be taken care of. When Ben talked about people being "good enough" or taking the children, perhaps he was talking about his initial goal of getting the literally good people. But over the years he was in control, his mission began to corrupt as he himself fell out of grace with the island.

What conclusion are we gonna get from all of this? I think as the main characters eventually discover what the island is, they're going to have a choice to make. Live in Eden, perfection, with the removal of the physical temptations of life, or leave the island, facing mortality. And perhaps the show will end with a very over the top message about life, morality, etc, all being uniquely human, and perfection, paradise, being too hard to achieve and not meant for humanity. No humans will exist on the island, and Eden will only exist as a thought. ( Jack, of course will deliver this speech. Kate will cry, and in 2010 when this is filmed, will have aged so poorly that people will think her facial wrinkles have entered a temporal flux...) Or maybe we'll get some moralistic message about technology and our advancing culture not being able to have paradise, and that paradise and perfection is back to the basics, literally.

Anyway...any thoughts on this?

Adam and Eve were told not to indulge upon the forbidden fruit. She listened to the snake and did, and in retaliation they were made lucid of their sexuality. So in a sense, sexuality marked the end of Eden. Even if it wasn't sexuality that spurred the loss of Eden. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough.
