has anyone noticed that the dvd box sets have dissapeared from retail stores? I am not sure if it is just my state, but every store Ive checked that used to
have them in Massachusetts does not anymore. That makes me feel like the only way to get them is online. But how hard is it so sell something online, like
through Amazon.com or something. Also, I ws thinking if they actually made more dvds, which i doubt, at this point they would have to make micronesia and
possibly china first. i have big brother 3 on dvd and im pretty sure thats the only one they made right?

I've seen 'em at BestBuy and Fry's Electronics. $18 at Fry's. I don't think they're being taken out of distribution.

these shows are getting scarce...maybe not so much Survivor yet but BB3 doesn't seem to be in production any moreWell if the BB3 set isn't in production anymore, a reason could be the packaging. Because of the amount of episodes of BB, that set has 9 discs to it. And the way the discs were packaged in the slip cases, many came lose in shipping, resulting in the discs coming straight out of the box being scratched. My cousin worked at a Media Play store back when that set came out and he got it for me for Christmas - he said he had to dig past 7 copies of the set before he finally shook one next to his ear and it sounded like all the discs were actually secure inside, and he was pulling sets straight out of the shipment box before they even hit the shelves. As far as I know, the set didn't sell all that well (and I'm sure that pointless "Best of..." DVD they released for BB4 sold even worse) so I doubt anybody felt like putting forth the effort or money to have the set repackaged. |

BB3 (and I would imagine the 'best-of' BB4 set too) sold even worse than the TAR sets did. A complete BB season requires a lot of discs, but they could
never justify the ~$65 price tag for Big Brother.
I'm actually trying to track down a copy myself but there's no way I'm spending more than I did for the Survivor sets on it and buying it used is too risky considering the awful packaging that causes the discs to be easily scratched. |

CBS really fucked up the BB3 release from the posts I just read. Why didn't it cross their minds to release it on two-sided discs? The packaging
could've then protected the four or five discs from scratches and have been much more cost efficient. Not like this would've increased sales much
although a lower price tag surely would've.
As I've said before, reality doesn't sell because there's little repeat value aside from 1% of hardcore fans. Watching challenges and tribal councils you know the results of makes things very non-suspenseful. What's left then are some watchable camp life moments, hence why Borneo works and why Palau should be thrown into a dumpster if received as a gift or better, recycled. |

Also SSS, I find that the worse a season, the more rewatchable it is. I could rewatch thailand and fiji a million times. Maybe it's because i keep
searching for good moments or that I remember less of them so it's better to rewatch.
TAR is the worst though, it's almost unbearable to rewatch because 90% of it is suspense about losing. Survivor is about 50% suspense and 50% content. |

SurvivorSurvivorSurvivor wrote:Exactly. That's why they need to get innovative about it. Unless you're talking something like Seinfeld or The Simpsons, sales are never guaranteed but reality shows are perfect candidates for an on-demand disc service--music rights are rarely an issue; the contracts most likely don't require the studios to give the players a cent; and should they feel a need for it, bonus material is generally readily available in the form of online-only deleted scenes, post-show interviews, etc. and you can surely scrounge up a few famewhores to toss off some commentaries. If it's done on-demand, the costs should offset themselves pretty quickly--and they really wouldn't even need to spend anything to promote it, just a link on the website and maybe a "bottom third" ad during the show and anyone interested will find their way to it. But alas, that makes too much sense. |

I think to have better sales for the DVD's, they need more extra's like deleted scenes, more commentaries, and better featurettes. Also, if they want
to attract buyers who have never seen the seasons before, I think it may help if they didn't use the 6 person cover format they have been using as it
spoils the outcome of the game as the 6 on the cover always reveals the winner and the majority of the rest of the top finishers. I had a friend who had never
seen the pre-ASS season's. He decided to buy a season on DVD but would not buy any of them with the exception of ASS as all 20 were on the cover as he
didn't want to be spoiled. Unfortunately for him, once he got the DVD's home and opened them, he realized that each DVD had the covers of each person
booted on that disc, then noticed on the last disc that only Amber was on it spoiling him on who the winner was. He was quite pissed about it and said he would
not buy any more of the DVD's.
As SSS said, these DVD's are made for the 1% hardcore fans of the show as there isn't enough extra's to get the lesser fans to buy them and the DVD cover's potentially scare away any possible new buyer's that are new to Survivor because it spoils the outcome. These are just my opinions of course. |

Big red ecks on the fucking spoilers that CBS puts ALL OVER the DVDs.
I love the episode descriptions on the back that pretty much tell you who goes home that episode. |

Also, don't forget the back of the Borneo DVD covers that literally say "Voted out: Sonja" or "Voted out: BB" on them.

Does anyone know if it's possible to take a season you bought off Itunes and burn it to a DVD? Cause if thats possible I'd buy all the recent seasons
not on DVD and get them that way. Then I'd just be missing Africa/Marquesas/Thailand/Amazon in good quality.

There's an application called SoundTaxi that can convert protected iTunes files to file formats that you can burn to DVD. But converting and then burning
decreases the quality quite a bit.

Did anybody else get their hands on that promotional DVD they released before Survivor: Amazon started airing? They made them available at Saturn car
dealerships, and I was lucky enough to have a relative who worked at one so she snagged a disc for me. The DVD featured pre-game interviews with all the
contestants as well as some other stuff, if I recall correctly. I still have mine around here somewhere, I'll have to go look for it...
I always figured that the contents of that promo DVD would make great special features on an official release of the Survivor: Amazon season, but I'm thinking more and more that will probably never happen...:-( |

beatles made a good point that crossed my mind earlier...on-demand episodes. Every episode of Survivor, Big Brother and The Amazing Race (if they can clear up
a few rights issues on that one) should be readily available via some online platform that CBS has a stake in. These shows make little to no money in American
syndication deals (BB has never even had one) but could definitely make $$$ with ad-supported episodes. It's free dough, all they need to do is upload it
to the web and find some sponsors.
