Here's a question for any diplomatic wonks:
The President says that he'll attend the opening ceremonies in Beijing because to not do so would be an insult to the Chinese. I don't remember hearing anything about Deng Xiaoping being in the audience in Atlanta in '96. Was he? |

I like where the U.S. male gymnasts and the Chinese are sort of trash talking each other. I like watching the men's gymnastics. Great article in the L.A.
Times Sunday about how China is "cleaning up" and took dog meat off the menus and installed toliets all over so the visitors won't have to stand
over a hole in the floor. They also took an online and tv course in manners.
Is the reason they showed so much of the women's beach volleyball last time because they wear those skimpy bikinis? |

Being that Shawn Johnson is from my town, with the local media spuzzing themselves and the inevitable Michael Phelps overkill it's very likely I will be
postal by the third day.

NBC has it set already. They'll "lock" on to two or three athletes and promote the hell out of them as mega-superstars. If no one emerges with a
great and dramatic story as the games unfold, they will fall back on these three for a continuing storyline to keep people watching (here they are at the great
wall, here they are eating dog, here they are kissing Chinese babies, etc).
The swimmers seem to be dominating early buzz- Phelps and that old steroid broad. I would guess that means the swimming events are last this year- am I right? |

They had a little telephone interview with Abby Wambach on the news today, I feel bad for her. I'm sure the people we'll see most on the coverage will be Phelps, Shawn Johnson, and Paul Hamm. Remember he had a little controversy with his win at the last olympics, so they'll milk that for maximum drama. And then we'll get a couple "feel good" stories about a Siberian marathon runner or a diver from Greenland or something, who has no chance to win anything but has some ridiculously hard story. |

I think the swimming finales are in week two and the track finales are week three so they don't detract from each other.
I tried looking at the NBC schedule, which is incredibly intricate and doesn't work so well yet, at least on Firefox. This olympiad, if you've got all of the NBC partner cable channels, if there's something on you want to see, it looks like you'll be able to see it. Finding it will be the challenge. I love the longshot stories. Be on the lookout for the geezer Japanese equestrian who last compted in the '64 Olympics. BTW, the legless South African who runs on prosthetics didn't qualify. That story might've been too treacly, though. ETA: WHOA! According to this story, NBC's going to broadcast events live on the web! I wonder how this is going to play out. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2008/07/tca-olympics-wi.html Holy crap, this may mean an August full of sleeping by day and watching by night.

If anyone has Verizon as their cable provider, I noticed that they have a channel dedicated to the Olympics. Its going to be interested to see what and when
they show events,

It would be weird if they didn't pimp Phelps as he has a shot at becoming the most decorated Olympian ever, of any nationality. I don't mind
him being a focal point, because he actually delivers. They pimped the ever loving shit out of the child before Athens and a lot of people (hello, Australian
swimming team) were waiting for him to fall on his face, but he kicked ass. This isn't like the Dan/Dave overhyped disaster of the 1992 Games. Yes, there
are lots of other swimmers worthy of the attention, and they'll get some, but it's inevitable they're going to hone in on Phelps.

Summer curling needs to be a part of the 2012 London Games. That sport is amazing! <3 I'll definitely try to watch as much as I can, even badminton and
table tennis.
Is the IOC going to make any more sports part of the program? If they're going to let beach volleyball be a part of the Games, then why not beach soccer? I saw a match from the FIFA cup of beach soccer between France and Iran while I was down in Mexico, and it was very entertaining. Also, more sports in the games should have women and men competing against each other. The only sport in the Games that does so is equestrian. |

Now that I have DVR, I will record every second of Olympics coverage and never go to sleep. There are few event I don't like watching. I even love
rowing.

I bought a new TV and added a second DVR for the Olympic games. I can record four things to the DVRs, and watch local NBC through the antenna (and if
it's true that there will be internet content, I can watch that on the new TV since it's connected to my computer).

Also, more sports in the games should have women and men competing against each otherThat's a good idea because I love tennis mixed doubles exactly because of that, its the only time you get to see a female tennis player return a male's serve or forehand, so I think they should of had mixed doubles tennis long ago in it too. I wish there was a place to give them suggestions. They should have a little suggestion box to click on and send them 5 trillion idea emails.

Wipeout the reality show should be an Olympic game. That's a mixed contest!

It was either the boxing or wrestling team left from SFO today for China. All the U.S. team has to go to San Jose first for a couple of days to be given
'rules, how to act, etc' before they leave. BTW....Diving, diving, diving....(Personal reason to cheer both the divers and NBC TV crew)....

Repeat after me:
Synchronized swimming is not an Olympic sport. Turkish Oil Wrestling IS an Olympic sport. You know what's really gonna be lacking about Beijing? The Ian Thorpe/Pieter van den Hoogenband lovefest. The 200m free finals? Good times. |

Actually, the things that are going to be lacking about the Beijing Olympics are:
A) Athletes http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25804285/ B) Spectators http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,388701,00.html C) Fun http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/18/AR2008071803356.html This is a clusterfuck not seen since the St. Louis games. At least Hitler -- ADOLF FUCKING HITLER WHO MASSACRED 11 MILLION PEOPLE -- allowed the athletes compete in '36. |

I was a late visitor to Athens for the 2004 games. August was when most of Athens was on vacation- they all blast off to the islands for a month. So there were
lots of tickets to be had for almost every event. I bet there will be lots of tickets to be had somewhere in Tianaman (sp) square in Beijing. Wish I knew
someone to crash with or I would be there!

If they added the mixed pairs tennis to the Olympics then they should add mixed pairs beach volleyball. Because that'll be the only way for female athletes
to get equal funding for their sports.

wish the male swimmers would go back to the speedos. The new body suits don't do it for me.
