Courtesy of the CBC:
Olympic athletes can't really be shown to be endorsing anything (ETA: I guess apart from official sponsors???) as they are supposed to be non-professional amateurs, hence the tape covering logos on outfits. Apparantly, Canadian swimmer Mark Tewkesbery (sp?) was almost prevented from claiming his gold medal in Barcelona because officials were considering disqualifying him for having a tiny logo on his towel on display. He didn't know until right before the medal ceremony whether he was going to be standing on the podium or not. And now you know !!! I am STILL up watching this shizz; I hate being so mediocre

Wrong, not captain. That person is the Labaron (sp?). Everyone else has positions or areas they aren't allowed to step out of, the Labaron can play
anywhere on the court.

If the Olympics is about non-professional amateurs, why the fuck is it different for basketball? Like the whole USA team has the NBA in it, and then the
foreign players in the NBA are playing for their home countries, like Yao Ming. So as long as they don't advertise, they are considered non-professional
amateurs? And didn't they take someone out of one of the last Olympics, maybe the winter one because he was a pro-athlete? I just don't get why we use
the NBA for Team USA instead of letting it be a showcase for younger talent. And not only us, but the rest of the world if they have pros on their team.
And it wouldn't be so bad it Kobe wasn't on the team. I can't fully support Team USA winning with a rapist on the team. |

Rob - I agree!
I think that the USA has extremely talented non-professionals to compete in Olympics. I think it was a huge mistake for the US to begin using professionals. The 1980 hockey gold wouldn't be memorable at all if it wasn't for the bunch of non-professionals pulling out the win against the #1 rated team. I think it especially cripples the US in basketball because these "stars" just can't get away from playing for personal glory to focus on the team. |

And that's gonna be a problem. Cause you know Kobe is gonna want to be the center of attention, even though he got his punk ass beat in the NBA
Championship and then tried to blame it on different shaped rims in Boston. If we lose in China, will he claim the Chinese used the same kind of rims Boston
used just to cost him a gold medal?

So, the pro-amateur thing. Apparently the Olympics used to be all amateurs so that it would be "regular people" and not professional athletes. This
worked until communism came up with state sponsored athletes which put capitalist athletes at a deficit because they had to have jobs and train. So they
scrapped the ban on professional athletes. I think it's up to the individual sports' governing bodies to decide who is eligible now.

Yeah, I was watching the swimming last night and it was fucking awesome! There were some fantastic swimmers out there and they were giving each other a run for
their money. I saw the interview with Lochte though, he looked seriously disappointed. He really believed he could beat Phelps and he wanted to prove it. Poor
guy.
And for anyone who's wondering about the events being live, you have to understand there is a 12 hour difference. So something that is happening at 12pm Beijing means it is happening at midnight EST. And yes, the fencers are screaming banshees. I wonder if the male fencers are like that too. |

Sure, Kobe is a rapist but he's OUR rapist and you better get behind him and show some support. Kobe could have slapped that girl around a lot more than he did, but he's not that kind of guy. Go USA, Go! |

I was pleasantly surprised at how much teamwork the US basketball team showed today -- very little showboating, if any. I think this team is going to be very
different from the asshole team in Athens, which made me cringe long before they started playing -- they were just one big advertisement for the NBA draped in
the flag.
I think the NBA learned its lesson. Those passes in the 2nd quarter were gorgeous. These guys are clearly communicating with each other. Anyhow I gave up watching once the rout was on, but you have to hand it to China for giving them a game early on. |
