One of my mother's cousins (no idea what that makes him to me) is a fourth-generation Robert, and of course he kept up the pattern when he had a son a few
years ago. I hate when people use the same name from generation to generation; it's lame. How conceited do you have to be to name your child after
yourself? (My grandfather/namesake excepted, although it did make things a bit confusing when he, my uncle, and I were all together and someone called for one
of us)

It's not like Jack is an abbreviation of John, is Jack considered more casual than John? |

There was a child at my work tonight named Marsdon. A white child with a 40-something mom, too. |

My late fil was a John and we called him Jack. That started when he was a kid. I don't get it either, if you like the name Jack why not just go for that
one?

Charles is another name that has tons of nicknames, half of which don't make sense. Chuck? Carl? Chas? It's not like Charles isn't already one
syllable.

Robert is a classic, inoffensive name. Fruity names doom your son to a life of cruel rhymes and dodgeball-targeting.
And I'm a little biased but I think the whole passing-the-name-on thing is a nice tradition |
