Why do people act as though pro-choice and pro-life are opposing ends of a continuum?
I'm pro-life. I believe that there are enough options for contraception - including emergency morning after - that abortion shouldn't be a matter of convenience. (I'm also pro-life when it comes to capital punishment, anti-terrorism efforts, and war.) But I'm also pro-choice, in that the circumstances surrounding unwanted or unplanned pregnancy are rarely simple. Some women simply cannot carry a baby to term without jeopardizing their financial security or their physical health. And anybody who makes the decision to terminate a pregnancy has to live with the "what ifs" for the life that wasn't allowed to be. If they can live with their decisions, then they should have access to safe, affordable health care. |
