I think we don't need Edgic anymore for this season. It couldn't be more obvious: Marcus is totally winning this shit.
Was Corinne, Bob and Dan INV or UTR1? It doesn't really matter, since Marcus is the perfect winner.. Oh, and Charlie got back his edition of worshipping Marcus..... What a horrible casting they did!!!! I'm desperate that there is only 4 women left, it looks worst than Fiji!!!! My initial ratings: Bob - UTR1 "reward" challenge question Corinne - UTR1 - some talking in camp Charlie - UTR2 - he loves Marcus... And I want to throw up with his charachter Marcus - CP - he's winning this shit Dan - UTR1 - some talking when he still was in Fang Randy - CP - I would rather see him winning. He's the only left Susie - CP - she is trying to show that she is a hardworker, but I believe she'll be the next to go... Ace - MORM - started N, and got a P, because he really gave all of him in the challenge, and because he was right, Kelly was the person to be booted Crystal - MORN - I believe this negativity can rule her out forever!!! After tonight it's (1) Marcus (2) Randy (3) Corinne
Charlie picks Randy who picks Corinne. Guess who is gonna inherit Jacquie's spot in the Onion alliance? Marucs and Randy are set up pre-challenge, with M considering an R boot if he isn't good in the IC, but together they dominate. Randy scores a Hat Trick in Paddle Lacrosse. If Randy wins the game with the Onions, I can't see how they'd edit his first 4 episodes any differently Corinne is either a strong INV or a weak UTR, but after her strength last episode I wouldn't eliminate her based on a non-TC episode where the Onions continuing on Kota were in no jeopardy and mostly had no story. I see a gradual SHIFT in Survivor editing, towards increasingly ignoring players who don't go to TC in pre-merge episodes. I noticed that last year (Parv ep.5-7, etc). Even the RECAPS are slanted towards the players featured in that night's episode. |

Wow. Poor Jacquie gets screwed by the tribe member switch. At least she got a positive edit. She didn't do anything in the IC (no one on Fang did anything) but got a lot of praise anyway in the edit. Probst and the editors liked Jacquie. On the other hand, Probst and the editors HATE Kelly. Every member of Fang did poorly in the IC, but Kelly got the brunt of Probst's edited negative commentary (it reminded me of poor Jessica in Fiji getting ragged on by Probst during the first IC that season). Then Probst might as well have told Fang to boot Kelly at the TC. He must have been pissed when Jacquie got booted instead. Hence Kelly's brutal edit so far this season. Okay, come on now. Bob and Corinne were INV. And it's not even close. Everyone got some time during the switch-up but, edgically, Bob and Corinne
were INV. Dan was borderline INV/UTR1. Charlie's one confessional gets him a UTR1.

On first watch:
Jacquie - OTTP4 - The whole second half of the episode was all about Jacquie is good at challenges, you shouldnt get rid of her. Oh well, I would have liked to have seen more from her but at least she went out giving it her all and trying her damnedest to get the vote switched. Kelly - OTTN4 - I lied, the second half of the episode was also Kelly sucks at challenges, get rid of her instead. This was also presented in a very one note fashion and I dont think her strategizing with The Fang Three earlier on is enough to move her to MORN status. Ken - CP4 - Overall this seemed like a straightforward CP with no real tone intended. He might have come off as a little smug when saying that he would just use Kelly as a vote but we were meant to not care after seeing how useless she was. He didnt really have a poor attitude back at camp after being horrible in the challenge so I think that given what went on after that, he shouldnt have any tone here. He was purely shown as a strategizer and looking for an angle. Marcus - CPP3 - Humbled by being picked as the best in his tribe but he will also see this as affecting his game in some way. He is shown as aware in this
confessional. His other confessional also shows awareness of the vote either going toward Randy or Susie but he want to keep Susie because he saw how much
work she did around camp. His mind is always going. He was also singled out as the challenge star which strengthens the P.

In the post-challenge pre-commercial victory flashbacks, there was no shot of a team celebration. It was Randy, then Corrine, then Marcus celebrating
individually. This is the first time all 3 have been on a team together, and the sequence really struck me.
I know it's not really a sticking point for edgic, but I thought I'd mention it. |

To throw challenges following a switch, majorities from former tribes need to be reasonably sure about the long-term loyalties of their comrades on the other
side. In this case, both tribes were so fundamentally divided to start with, that there was really no incentive to take drastic steps to save those stranded
in a minority.
I'm desperate that there is only 4 women left, it looks worst than Fiji!!!!Is there something about Sugar that makes you doubt her femininity? Or Kelly or Crystal or, for that matter, Suzie or Corinne? jk |

Ep. 4 Ace - MORM4. Any time somebody makes a bold prediction as if it's factual that doesn't pan out, the intent is N. The editors only use two types of characters for this type of thing, dumb and evil. Whether it's something as blatant in hindsight as Fairypla guaranteeing Sandra won't win or Dr. Sean saying that his vote for Jenna won't matter it's a tactic for making non-winning N characters look bad. So for the boldness of Ace's prediction that Kelly is the next to go on their tribe, the N needs to be reflected. However, this is balanced by Jiffy's re-emphasizing what the challenge footage showed quite clearly, that Ace was one of the few on the tribe that was competent in that challenge. Crystal - MOR4. While she had strategy talk, there was so little depth or insight into it that it's so hard to give her a CP. I can see a potential N with her excuse making for not doing well in the challenge coming across as whiney. GC - MORN4. Much like Crystal only with more excuses, whining and dickheadness. Ken - MOR4. Much like Crystal, with less whining, and a new crush to replace what's her name that was booted first. Jacquie - MORP4. Clearly set up as a person who would help them in challenges, but much of the story concerning her was only peripherally about her, basically, how keeping or booting her would affect the original Fangs. Kelly - OTTN3. While she had a few dimensions to her, each dimension was unsubstantial or cartoonish. She was the caricature of the scorned woman being targeted by Ace, bent on getting revenge on him. She was one of the utterly inept challenge competitors. She was the willing lapdog. I also considered M, but while there was definite active N in her edit, any P was residual rather than active. When the tribes were first switched, there may have been some rooting for her to get her revenge on Ace for being in the forefront of making her an outsider, but by the end of the episode, keeping her was seen as mere pragmatism for the old Fangs, rather than a sympathetic move the audience would like them for. Matty - MOR4. My God he's dull. Bob - UTR1. His part in the ranking of tribemates, and choosing new tribes was just memorable enough to avoid INV. Charlie - UTR1. I'm not sure about this, but I think he just might have a little crush on Marcus. I think I can now safely eliminate him. Corinne - UTR1. The closest to INV of the 3. The only reason she's not getting an INV isn't to save her from elimination, it's to avoid the sexism charges if I give Bob, Charlie and Dan UTRs and her INV. Dan - UTR1. He's no astronaut. Marcus - MOR2. Your winner. Randy - CPM3. Potentially your late season distraction. Also, for this episode, the old out of shape curmudgeon that outperformed most of the other tribe in a fairly physical challenge. Susie - MORP2. Sweet hard working "older" woman, (in Survivor terms) that the audience is supposed to want
to see last. Potential to be another Lydia.
TC2 - Ace, Paloma, Sweet Sweet Sugar TC3 - Dan, GC, Matty
Winner picks after TC1 - Marcus, Bob, Crystal,
TC4 - Marcus, Randy, Crystal

This episode presents a great case of where the editing clearly intends for us to feel disagreement about a vote when a level-headed analysis would suggest
it was clearly the correct move. Jacquie got positive editing, and Kelly got negative editing, and we even got Sugar's comment that Fang would be stupid
not to vote off Kelly, but clearly it makes better sense to eliminate the vulnerable Onion Alliance member (or at least the Kota insider, which they did know
about) to save a player who is going to vote along with you in the future.

Yes, cl, I almost put a disclaimer "except for Ethan" (when I said they won't show a winner discussing throwing a challenge), however, that was the FIRST time it was done, and thus it was shown because the game was still new and it was a "twist" in strategy (IMO). Since then, throwing a challenge is virtually always shown as negative. I should have said "post-Ethan, ..." It won't "come into play" now since Sugar is going to end up back with Ace, which the throw would have prevented.
The numero uno reason it's not good to throw a challenge is because you lose numbers in relation to the other tribe. However, in this case (as cl pointed out), that was not the outcome, since the tribe numbers stay equal no matter what. It's just a matter of whether you prefer having Sugar on your team or someone else, and for Marcus/Charlie, seems to me that having her would be a huge benefit for two reasons: 1) another original tribe member in a newly-mixed tribe where new alliances probably haven't taken hold 2) (more importantly, IMO), keeping Sugar away from Ace (now on the enemy tribe) when you KNOW there is a strong alliance there. Oh, and I forgot about 3) There is a huge chance she will have the Immunity Idol when she joins you. I really think the better "prize" this time was Sugar (+ Idol, in all likelihood), versus simply having the statue for a week. But, that's not Edgic...except that I think that because of my assertion above, the fact that we saw neither tribe discussing throwing the challenge could be significant. |

The look/feel of this season still impresses me. They're in rainforest, then open plains, then at the ocean.
For a moment I'm going to pretend that Marcus isn't winning - it makes edgic more fun that way. After only one viewing, and explanations only slightly snarky: Fang: Jacquie - MORP. Poor thing. In with a nice, healthy alliance, gets a very bad break in the tribe shuffle, gets torpedoed by Kelly (in a smart move!) who said that Jacquie and Ace are hugpartners, and finally gets the shaft. The primary thing she did wrong was not immediately try and set up an alliance with the preFangs. But I think she was doomed regardless - the very nasty (in a GOOD way) "rank your tribesmates" test gave the Fangs the clear notion that it was Kelly who was on the outs... of course, they saw why after Kelly was with them a few days... Kelly - OTTN. The edit made it clear she was worthless et al. Even if she wasn't, that's what the editing told us. Ace - MORM. It's odd how his accent fades in and out, like a distant AM radio station at night. He's from London - no, Baltimore! - no, wait, Generic England! Gadzooks I don't like him. Sugar - UTRP. Not quite into MORland. Poster child for perky. Crystal - CPM. Ken - MOR. His strategic talk seemed to boil down to "She's cute." Get that guy a hooker. He's lonely. Seemed torn about the decision, but that was just Survivor Editing Rule 1.2.63. GC - MORN. Hard to give an OTT to a person who had some personal insight about where he stands with others in his tribe. More N than neutral cuz of SPVs. Matty - MOR. He's in an alliance - no, he's not! Plenty of face time, but when he was talking with the other preFangs about who to vote for all he got for screentime was a "I'll go along with whatever you guys want." No confessions about what he feels to bolster his wimpout. Kota Marcus - MOR. Not a lot of tone there, but self-aware and a decent presence. I was quite interested by his talk about Randy needing to prove himself in the RC, and Randy came up big-time. There really wasn't much point to his confessional and Randy SPV unless they're ultimately joined at the hip. (he's NOT the obvious winner... he's NOT the obvious winner... I keep repeating that and it's NOT working...) Charlie - UTR. Okay, we get the message. He's sort of like Kenny, except DC vs. AC. Strategy is defined by cuteness. Corinne - UTR. Not much there, one could define it as a decent cooldown episode. Bob - UTRP. Yet again nice SPV while he only has a few lines himself. Jeff's callout about diamonds in the rough plus the SPV pushes him above INV. Still being set up for the honorable PP voteout. Dan - UTR. Huh? Sort of vanished here. Susie - MORP. So Susa talks. Typical "gotta show my work ethic" line from a person that will soon be voted out. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along. Randy - CPM. Okay, I'm in the Randy fan club. His N didn't come from his "I hate all of you" comment, which I thought was funny as hell. Instead, it was the general sense of unease you got when Marcus - the obvious leader of the tribe - gave his "Randy better step it up" line, added to the GC = Cancer statement. But Randy had several strong P moments, perhaps the most unusual one was that he did indeed step it up. Winners sigh. Marcus Randy Corrine... |
