Maybe I'm offbase, but I got the impression Don was talking to Betty, in that mysterious phone call. Perhaps he told her of his past, and by using his real name, he's signaling to her he wants to be his true self now in their relationship? Eh, I'm probably all wrong on that, but it was my first thought.
The only people who know that he's not the real Don Draper are Cooper and Pete and I can't see him calling them. He used his full name on the phone, if he had told Betty, he would have called and simply said "Hi, it's Dick", not using his full name. But that doesn't matter, since we know he never confided in Betty, so he wasn't calling her.
The only other person who may know he's not Don Draper is that woman from the car dealership. They introduced us to her and then never showed us the outcome. There must be more to her story, Weiner wouldn't just have a woman show up like that for no reason.
I think you are right.
