Officials with a company that manufactures shotgun racks sent out a news release Tuesday that asked, "Could a Bedside Shotgun Rack Have Saved Jennifer Hudson's Family from Tragic Death?"

The rack, called The Back-Up ($39.95, plus shipping and handling), is designed to fit along the side of the gun owner's bed, between the mattress and box spring. The release goes on to say, "Whether it is someone known or a stranger entering the home, too many people in this country are paying with their lives during these home invasions. The Hudson family is just one of far too many Americans gunned down in their own home."

A. John Peters, president of Home Back-Up Protection, said Tuesday that he didn't issue the news release to capitalize on the Chicago family's pain.

"I really feel sorry for these people," said Peters, 60. "I just don't want this to happen to someone else. Sometimes I think people need to be hit between the eyes."

Peters, of Browerville, Minn., population 734, said he got the idea while talking with some co-workers about the Hudson tragedy, in which the Oscar-winning actress' mother, brother and nephew were shot to death.

Asked if he thought the ad might offend people, Peters said he expected it might. "Just having a gun rack offends a lot of people."

The estranged husband of Hudson's sister Julia has been called a person of interest, but has not been charged in the case.

The establishment of a new foundation to aid the kin of homicide victims was announced by the Hudson family Thursday, People.com reported.

"The specific purpose of the foundation is to care for the needs of families who have lost relatives to a violent crime," the family said in a statement. "This encompasses their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter as well as grief counseling."

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who spoke at a Chicago prayer vigil Wednesday night at the family's church, told People.com Hudson and her relatives "are overwhelmed by the suddenness and the unexpectedness of it all. This family knows triumph, and they also know tragedy."

A number of celebrities are expected to attend the private memorial service for Jennifer Hudson's slain mother, brother and nephew this morning.

According to sources, celebrities such as Missy Elliott, Oprah Winfrey, Ciara, Clive Davis, Queen Latifah, Usher and Patti LaBelle will be in attendence. Mayor Daley and Rev. Willie Barrow are also said to be attending the service.

Fellow American Idol alum Fantasia is expected to sing.

The private service will be held at the Apostolic Church of God, 6320 S. Dorchester. It is for invited guests only and will be closed casket.

Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and brother, Jason Hudson, 29, were shot and killed Friday morning at their Englewood home. Julian King, the 7-year-old son of Jennifer Hudson's sister, Julia, was found dead Monday morning in Jason Hudson's SUV, which was taken from the home.

Julia Hudson's estranged husband, William Balfour, 27, has been named a person of interest in the slayings. He is being jailed on a probation violation. He has not been charged in the shootings.

In what had to have been the hardest day of her life, Jennifer Hudson bid her mother, brother and nephew goodbye. At the funeral for her three slain family members, Hudson kissed her mother goodbye. Her friend, Fantasia sang at the service.

As the two-hour wake for her mother, brother and nephew came to an end, Jennifer Hudson approached their coffins and spent a few moments with each.

She paused at the casket of her 7-year-old nephew Julian, then moved on, gently touching the body of her mother. Composed, the 27-year actress and singer leaned down to kiss her mother goodbye. She paused again before her brother's casket before taking her seat.

The three-hour funeral reached an emotional peak when American Idol Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino sang a gospel classic, "Your Grace and Mercy". Calling the Hudsons "my family," she walked off the stage and into the aisle where she took Jennifer's hand and sang directly to the actress.

"I think it healed Jennifer's soul just then," said family friend, Lisa Allison.

The funeral ended shortly afterward and now the funeral procession is being led to Oak Woods Cemetery on the South Side by a horse-drawn carriage.

The service included several hours of eulogies and scriptures and was filled with gospel music and happy memories. The Rev. Jesse Jackson and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley spoke during the funeral.

This is the saddest and gut wrenching thing to read. I hope to God Jennifer gets the strength to continue on in her life and can find some ounce of peace in some way in her life again. I can't imagine the torture this is going to be for the rest of all the days of her life. My thoughts and prayers are with Jennifer, her sister, and all those affected by the loss.
