18. The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show (season 8)
Another Itchy and Scratchy-centric episode, this time dealing with the addition of a main character to a television show to attempt to rejuvenate the franchise. What makes it great is the parody of the creative process behind adding the new character. The board-meeting between Roger Meyer and his writers and network execs shows how lazy and uninspired the creative process behind adding a new character can be, and the result, Poochie, reflects it. At the same time, a new character, Roy, is introduced as a member of the Simpson household. He bears a striking resemblance to Poochie and even talks in a similar way. The episode is hilarious of course. Roy is probably my favorite "one-episode" character of all time (yes, even beating Frank Grimes). It's an obvious joke, but I love it and thought it really worked well. Comic Book Guy was great this episode and I believe it was the first time he ever said "Worst episode ever". I love self-reflexive Simpsons episodes when they're done well, and this is a great example. Quotes: Network Exec: "We're talking the original dog from hell." Writer: "You mean Cerberus?" Homer: "Oh, no attitude eh? Not in your face huh? Well, you can cram it with walnuts ugly!" Database: "Uh excuse me, Mr. Simpson. On the Itchy and Scratchy CD-ROM, is there a way to get out of the dungeon without using the wizard key?" Homer: "What the hell are you talking about?" Milhouse: "When are they gonna get to the fireworks factory?" Poochie: "I have to go now, my planet needs me." Note: Poochie died on the way back to his home planet Homer: "Well, I guess I learned my lesson. The thing is, I lost creative control of the project...and I forgot to ask for any money. Well, live and learn." |

Was that the ep where the girl who voices Itchy and Scratchy explains how she did Road Runner, too, but the cheap bastards only paid her to do one beep? If so,
great choice.

17. King-Size Homer (season 7)
This episode revolves around Homer gaining 61 lbs. to get on disability as someone suffering from "hyper-obesity". While the writers decided to center the episode around an issue that is a national problem, don't expect them to attempt to shove some sort of lesson down your throat. Homer is almost completely unapologetic about his quest to become obese, and in the end it saves his life because, as Lisa points out, Homer would have fallen to his death at the power plant if he was any thinner. The unapologetic nature of the episode is what makes it so funny though. Marge and Lisa represent the voice of reason in "King-Size Homer", but they have little affect on Homer's weight gain. Instead the focus of the jokes and the storyline revolves around the process of Homer gaining the weight. Dr. Nick's guidance, Homer's daydream about the ideal work environment in his backyard, the montage of food-shopping/food gorging, and Homer's trip to the movies to see "Honk if you're Horny" are some of the highlights of the episode. Quotes: Homer: "All my life I've been an obese man trapped in a fat man's body" Homer: "I don't want to look like a weirdo...I'll just take the moo moo" Bart: "I wash myself with a rag on a stick" Phone Operator: "The fingers you are dialing with are too fat. To obtain a special dialing wand, please mash the keypad with your palm now" Homer: "Gas, brake, honk...gas, brake, honk...honk, honk, punch...gas, gas, gas" Movie theater customer: "Hey Fatty, I got a movie for ya, "A Fridge too Far" Bart: "And I think it's ironic that for once Dad's butt prevented the release of toxic gas" |

16. Lisa's First Word (season
4)
It's getting pretty redundant to keep saying that I find an episode hilarious in these descriptions, so from now on let's just assume that if an episode shows up on this list I find it ridiculously funny. What "Lisa's First Word" has going for it besides being hilarious is that it represents Simpsons flashback episodes that actually have heart and establish great Simpsons history. Recent seasons feature countless re-tellings of how Marge and Homer met and fell in love, along with flashback episodes whose sole purpose is to fit in stupid pop-culture references and jokes (I recently caught part of a newer episode that featured Homer as a grunge band singer just like Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, what the hell?). Bart as a little kid was awesome, inventing the term "Domer" (a combination of Dad and Homer), flushing Homer's keys and wallet down the toilet, being terrified of the clown bed that Homer built him, and having the fantasy of what it would be like when the baby was born. Meeting Flanders is also great, with the awesome song and Flanders' shirt "I <3 Webster". It also featured the strangest guest voice of all time, where Elizabeth Taylor voiced Maggie's first word (and that's it). Quotes: Bart: Can you say get bent? Marge: Bart! Bart: Mister Rogers says it all the time! Marge: He does not. Maggie: [burp] Homer: Did you hear that? She said "burlap"! Marge: There's going to be twice as much love in this house as there is now! Homer: We're going to start doing it in the morning? Marge: I'm afraid we're going to need a bigger house. Homer: No, we won't. I've got it all figured out. The baby can have Bart's crib and Bart'll sleep with us until he's 21. Marge: Won't that warp him? Homer: My cousin Frank did it. Marge: You don't have a cousin Frank. Homer: He became Francine back in '76. Then he joined that cult. I think her name is Mother Shabubu now. Bart: I am so great! I am so great! Everybody loves me, I am so great! Bart: I was sitting there! Lisa: I don't see your name on it! Bart: It's right there! Marge: Bart, don't write on the rug. |
