Glam...I'm not wanting anything like Manhattan. I grew up 30 minutes outside and spent a big portion of my life in the city. It's not my scene anymore.
No Dean and Deluca? Cool...just thought I would ask. Why are you getting pissy with me? Sorry if no one knew if your Manolo's were real...maybe they were
2007? Anyway...coming from a Macy's the size of my house (not big) ANY type of shopping would be better than here. I have no choice in the matter. Mr. Nolo
will be transferring there. I am looking for the bright side to moving there. We will be be renting for the first year so we will have time to check out all
areas. Zzunk, we gotta go where the work is. In a few months there is nothing going on here and our house price is dropping daily due to the vog. No one wants
to move here...they can just go to Maui or Oahu instead.

nololos wrote: Nololos, I admire your will and willingness to relocate. Bad economic times require changes and those that change will likely survive, but they will have made some big sacrifices. Seattle (or Portland) are good towns -- hopefully you have some jobs (or can be hired on a subcontractor basis). The key -- I repeat -- the key for Pacific Northwest newcomers surviving the weather is to embrace it. Don't stay inside when it rains, go out for a walk in the woods (sometimes drier because of the tree cover). Go shopping, go to the movies. Use the sunny days for gardening, the chores, the parties, etc. Yes, people in the PNW are used to impromptu parties. Also, get together with friends on a weekly basis so there is always an excuse to get out of the house. Good luck and welcome to Emerald City (or the Rose City, 150 miles to the south). |

Well, if your husband is going to be working in Woodinville, live there. It is a really nice city/town. You can get a house with a good sized yard.
You're in an excellent school district (Northshore, recently rated top 9 in the nation; I am in the same district since I live in Bothell). Prices are
much more reasonable than Bellevue.
Woodinville has wineries and breweries, the Sammamish River Trail cuts right through it (It's an extension of the Burke Gilman trail) and it is just a really nice city. Glam is right...Seattle is not Manhattan, but it's very nice. She must have really snobby friends though, cause I have no trouble meeting people and having friends. My neighborhood is very friendly; we have neighborhood movie nights, outings, etc. I'm not much into shopping though, so I really can't comment on that. |

Zzunk, That is what I hear about living there. That you have to embrace it. I love doing anything outdoors. Fly fishing in the rain sounds awesome to me. From
what I can tell there is more than one gym and a few climbing gyms. Hiking is cool especially with my dogs.
Of all the places I have ever lived I would have to say Kona is the worst as far as cold unfriendly people. Everyone says the people are so nice here...that's a joke. They (we?) are just happy to get your money and know you are going home in a week. Sorry. Agaim I have to say I could care less about nightlife. I really just want a fairly decent dinner and 2 of my favorite stores are there. That alone would make me happy. I am a simple girl. Mr. Nolo will be going from really high end residential homes to commercial type things. Think...the new Nintendo headquarters. Seahawk...I would so do movie night w/ you. Although I know you aren't asking... I am happy just getting a cup of coffee and shooting the breeze for a few hours. Sounds boring but that is me. |

I do agree with Zzunk.. the key to survival here is understanding how to work in this climate but more importantly the lack of light.. and coming from Hawaii
and moving to bloody Whidbey Island would be suicide of Cobain proportions.
Rent somewhere in the city hoods there are tons of neighborhoods.. tons.. even Bainbridge Island which is literally a ferry ride into the city but without hellish commutes would be better if you want "rural" and "urban" This is not where you come and move to the hicks.. shit you would lose your marbles.. and if you want gays you have to be in the city.. honestly Nolos you are just making no sense when you haven't ever been here so listen to people who do .. when you are over 35 here its much tougher to make it so you have to push yourself .. this town is loathsome but as you are married and the husband has a job they are moving you.. move somewhere in town there are many dog parks and places to walk dogs so it will make up for the lack of space until you learn to navigate here and make friends.. as for these impromptu parties they aren't happening unless you are in your 20s and live in the "hipster hoods" This town is very very hard to make friends.. I am as guilty of it as the rest of the natives.. I have my group and I am like most of the true natives a loner who has no interest in socializing.. god forbid a woman goes out on her own in this town... the men here think you are a whore.. its just bizzare... so you adapt but you won't make it living way out in the boons not your first year here. So you will enjoy being outside, the shopping is better, there are more choices.. that said that means in the city not in the woods.. and no the woods contrary to popular belief are not 10 minutes out of town.. try hours.. I takes me 45 minutes to make my usual lower queen anne to so seattle run most days.. which in non traffic 20. Its that bad here and I lived in San Francisco for 8 years and it was nothing like this.. but they had public transport bad as it was it was easy to get around.. here you HAVE to drive. |

It's a tad hypocritical that you want to move from a "Big" rock to a small rock (Whidbey)... although admittedly, you can drive off that small
rock.
I totally understand getting off the islands. A certain claustrophobia does set in. Just remember, it's gonna be FAR, FAR wetter. At least when it rains in Hilo, it's 80% late at night. In Seattle, it's day after day, after day. If you need sun but not warmth (that's me)...I think you'll suffer a LOT. You'll have to either make the best of it (remember, it's green green GREEN there)...or beg for a husband transfer after the first year. Just be prepared that it might be too much of a shock from a HI move to be able to handle, long-term. It's GREAT that you are gonna rent for a while first, though. |

You need to find the right place for you and YOUR lifestyle.. if you are a parent suburban family shit who enjoys living in identical houses with a cul de sac
and families etc then the burbs such as Woodinville, Bothell, etc ar perfect. If you are a couple with no kids and enjoy dinner's out etc.. In the city..
Queen Anne/North Cap Hill, Madison Valley, West Seattle, Greenwood, Wallingford, Ravenna Wedgewood, Seward Park, Mount Baker just to name a few.... if you are
single Belltown/Queen Anne/Cap Hill/First Hill/Downtown part of West Seattle
Tech people and those with NEW money excluding Medina (old money) live in Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah, Redmond. Areas of "compromise" Shoreline/North Seattle/Everett/Edmonds/Lynnwood... And ALL of this you will know after living here a year and finding your niche... I would not be caught dead at a Sporting Event, I wear designer clothes and yet I do hang with mostly hipsters/urban folk although all my friends native or not are pretty diverse only a couple are married (and surprise I never see them.. everyone is pretty married here unless you are young) most are single fashionista types and all say the same thing about seattle... PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE and unsocial. Geeks are not known for having either fashion or social skills.. I stay away from them.. I live and play in the last remaining "ghetto" for Seattle... I lived in West Oakland so the worst thing I could do is ever live in white suburbia. But ironically everyone here knows everyone they call if I haven't shown up at my regular spots.. we are a "clique" so you don't need suburbia to have that.. but it takes time for that to develop.. and again we are almost all single and "older" and most are transplants.. they always say for a native you sure are friendly... denial is big here too seattleites refuse to believe it..... it explains our sports teams and our love hate thing.. again PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE. |

I am the yang to GlamsSlam's ying. I LOVE sporting events (NFL, NHL, MLB and PGA) and wouldn't be caught dead in designer clothes.

Sunnie, that's what kills me about being all the way out here. My family and friends are all on the east coast. At least we will be back on the mainland
and traveling will be easier. We will be able to knock thousands off our airfares. Big rock to a little rock? Sure, as long as there is some type of city to go
to. I am so tired of having to fly to get to any kind of city. I am (I think) fully prepared for the weather shock. Glam...we have no kids so schools are not
our concern. Sports teams? What are they? The funny part of all this is my main concern is for the happiness of my dogs. I want a big area for them to run.

Issaquah/Sammamish native here. When I grew up here, when you said "Issaquah," people from Seattle would ask if you lived on a farm. But it's
really different now--all the Microsoft people bought McMansions in Sammamish. It's still worth a visit over Salmon Days in October, if you can find
parking. If you're working in Woodinville, you'll really want to live up that way. If it's Bellevue, you can get away with living in Seattle
because most of the traffic across I-90's moving into Seattle, not the Eastside. Northwest people tend to be less friendly than Southern Californians, but
also tend to be less flake-y.

Spankalicious wrote: What tipped you? My large schlong? That is a whole other breed here.. the white trash sport fanatic.. I cannot believe how SERIOUS they take sports here but the joke is its all fair weather its because there is nothing else to do on the weekends and people are so unsocial they use these events to have "gatherings" I have yet to find other than some hotel bars without a TV...for a city of people who claim to watch no TV they must go to bars to do so.. in normal cities you watch TV at home... here they are too cheap or not paid enough to afford cable... unless of course you are white and live in Suburbia...then watch out for the big screens and bad lazyboy furniture. People are obsessed with two things here - houses and cars the rest not so much..... think of Roseanne when she won the lottery that is how they are here.. and those who didn't make money whine and complain incessantly about the "outsiders" who came here and drove housing prices, etc up... I went to a coffee meetup when I first got here and they spent the entire time complaining about the price of the 2 buck cupcakes.. A friend of my from London was with me and was aghast at that... we laughed our asses off... And shop at REI... lovely clothes which you will need.. I have been there twice in my entire life here... but then again they had cops and traffic cones at the keene sale.. I had never heard of keenes or crocs until I got here.. and another friend of mine who also moved back said "shit this is scary" but those are the number one and two of shoes.. they go with the REI crap. Again your dogs will have plenty of room to roam in all the dog parks.. one thing its VERY DOG FRIENDLY here and there are ample places to take them temporarily until you get your bearings.. just get the standard oversized truck/suv everyone else drives.. Prius' natch if you are "greenie" and take them to Marymoor park, or any of the number of them that will get you out and meeting people and again learning your way around. Just tell people you are from Idaho or some other "red state" and say that is why you moved here to be with people of like mind... they are obsessed with "liberalism" as long as its white or a nearly white black guy.. yet 20 minutes outside the city limits they would shoot a black person. |
