Alexis & Tanya - Colleagues; 34 and 36
Alexis and Tanya are two Chinese Americans that despite only having recently moved from Beijing and Shanghai, China but have already climbed quickly up the corporate ladder, here in the U.S. Both agree that their competitive drive is what has propelled them forward in life. Other than their ethnic similarities and same attitude towards work, Alexis & Tanya are two completely different individuals. Alexis is the more reserved and methodical of the two. She's more comfortable in front of a computer than having to be exposed to the outdoors. However, she brings along a set of skills including the knowledge of seven different languages, academic prowess, exceptional map reading skills and her ability to analyze situations when things get too hectic. Tanya, on the other hand, is much more spontaneous than her partner. She is willing to do just about anything (except flirt) to get ahead. One of the race's biggest fans, she claims to know the race like the back of her hand and claims that they will maintain friendly relations with others but the game will always take priority over friendships. She cites her own weakness as being prone to outbursts in certain high pressure situations and being openly nasty to anyone who offends her. Both say they have a reasonable sense of humor but if any team crosses the line, they will not hold back to make their lives miserable.
Raphael & Darrell - Uncle/Nephew; 49 and 24
At first glance, one would think that Raphael & Darrell are father/son, because of their closeness. However, despite not being father/son, uncle and nephew Raphael & Darrell share a bond that is even stronger than most father and sons, after the traumatic experience they've both been through. At the age of 4, Darrell's parents went through a divorce and neither wanted to have the economical and emotional baggage of their relationship, their son. After going their separate ways, they considered sending Darrell to an orphanage until Raphael, Darrell's mom's brother, decided to take him under his wing. And for the past 20 years, the uncle and nephew have been as close as can be. Raphael, a gay activist, has been constantly criticized by his family members because of his sexuality. The situation worsened as Darrell announced six months ago that he too was gay and had a boyfriend. Family members blamed Raphael for his negative influence on his nephew and both have now been ostracized by their traditional families. Both say that they don't think sexuality is all that important and what's most important in life is to enjoy it to the fullest. Both uncle and nephew say that The Amazing Race would be the perfect opportunity to get away from their insane and retarded family and that the US$1 million dollars at the end would be a good bonus. Raphael says his biggest asset to the team is that he has been to nearly 30 different countries whereas Darrell says his biggest asset would be his relatively good looks and his athleticism.
