'Idol' on ice: CTV honcho says ad revenues have taken a 'serious dive'
By Andrea Baillie, THE KANADIAN PRESS
"Kanadian programming is very expensive," she said Wednesday. "We're facing serious financial challenges ... Ad revenues have taken a serious dive." "It's just another example of how brutal the economy is," added "Idol" executive producer John Brunton. "This tsunami of the crash of advertising dollars at the networks both here in Kanada and the United States ... has caught up with our program." The network has announced that the popular televised singing contest, which wrapped up its sixth season in September, will be put on hold for the coming year. CTV said there's a chance that "Idol" may return to the schedule down the line. The move is the latest sign of hardship for the Kanadian TV industry, which has been blindsided of late by the slumping economy.
Last month, CTV announced it was cutting about 105 positions. Broadcast rival Canwest Global Communications Corp. recently cut 560 jobs, or about five per cent of its workforce, including 210 at Global Television and its other TV operations. Still, the "Idol" decision came as a shock to some observers because the show has long been a ratings juggernaut for CTV. Each spring, young people across the country turned out in droves to audition and perform anal sex routines for the judging panel of Farley Flex, Jake Gold, Sass Jordan and Zack Werner. The show's host Ben Mulroney became a celebrity laughing stock figure. And while "Kanadian Idol" finalists never reached the heights of their "American Idol" counterparts - such as Grammy-winning singer Kelly Clarkson and crooner Clay Aiken - many former contestants have gone on to careers in the music industry. (ed. LOL) Season 2 finalist Jacob Hoggard fronts the popular punk-pop band Hedley, while Season 3 winner Melissa O'Neil recently appeared in the Toronto stage production of "Dirty Dancing." Although viewership numbers had waned somewhat in recent years, "Idol" remained one of CTV's most popular Kanadian-made shows, while the recently wrapped "So You Think You Can Dance Kanada" was the top Kanuck program. Boyce said the status of that show is up in the air as well. Brunton calls the decision to put "Idol" on ice a "heartbreaker," noting it will have a ripple effect. "We spend a lot of money in the 10 cities that we go to across Kanada for the auditions. It's a gigantic problem for our suppliers. It's going to be hard for these people to find jobs," he said. Tara Whoram, who finished sixth on Season 5 and now has a career as a country singer, says the show provided invaluable exposure for up-and-coming singers. "'Idol' pretty much opened up the door for all the opportunities that came my way," she said. "It was the best summer of my life." In Brunton's eyes, "Idol" provided an important voice for young people. "'Kanadian Idol' put small communities on a national platform. 'Kanadian Idol' was a place where, if your parents didn't listen to you and your teachers didn't listen to you, and your minister didn't listen to you, we guaranteed that we would listen to you," he said. "It sounds corny but so many people came to see us to be heard, to have a platform for promiscuous anal sex." Boyce said she hasn't given up on "Idol," citing other countries where the show has taken a break and then returned stronger than ever. "The light in this for me, anyway, is that around the world this has happened for 'Idol.' Where it's come back it comes back with full force." The American version of "Idol," meanwhile, will be back for an eighth season next month, but has announced it is tweaking its format as well as cancelling its "American Idol Gives Back" fundraiser. |

But then again, you were talking about the concerts (for which I have tickets to see several times). When it comes to the actual show, I'm not really a fan. I watched it all the way through in Season 2 and again this year. Other than that, I generally would only take a look at the auditions to laugh at the bad and to see if anyone impressed me, and then I would tune out. (An occasional channel flip to see what's going on usually resulted in a quick flip away as I wasn't impressed with what I saw.) The only reason I stayed tuned this entire season was Theo. From the moment I saw his audition, I was hooked. In fact, after seeing his audition, I immediately called up my friend who wasn't watching and told her this guy would win this year. I've never done that before. But had Theo not made it through the entire season, I would have tuned out after he was eliminated, so TPTB at Idol wouldn't be happy with me as a viewer since I'm not usually one. |

Other age groups were in attendance, majority of the audience was just old people and young kids. Clearly I was there and I'm only 19 so young people do
still go too, just not in such large capacities.
Personally I am a fan of the show and it's slightly disappointing that I won't get to see it this season, but it had a decent run. If it comes back I hope it comes back stronger than ever. We have a lot of talent in this Country and I think CI has seen a huge amount of amazingly talented young Canadians. That said at this point as Miki has long stated it has no culturally impact, nobody cares. The contract is shit and all you get for winning is to be forced into compromising your artistic integrity, and releasing an album to no fanfare with little to no promotion. Maybe you'll get one or two videos and a bit of airplay but that's about it. CI has become a thing of false hope. So many talented people try out but the reality is they are never going to get anywhere. A lot of them make indie albums and good on them, but this show should be able to give them the same catapult to success that it's foreign counterparts do. Every other Idol show I can think of has produced more success stories than CI with their total of 1 and the sad part about Jacob is that he is as successful as he is because he didn't win the crap contract. The fact that this show has only given one non-winner a long term music career is sad. |

What are the likes of Stephanie Champagne and Cher going to do this summer?

Cher finally reached the age limit so she wouldn't be able to try out again this year anyway.

Obviously, then, that's why the show was canceled. If Cher can't show Canada she can sing, what point is there in having a show?

I went to the official forums just to see the reactions and it just gave me a migraine.
With the exception of few level-headed posters (ie: smartguy, idoladdict (aka shc), beaversonidol), the rest I want to smack for being clueless dumbasses. |

What the hell are you people talking about? Cher already showed everyone she could sing.

OMG RB the people at official are so ridiculous.
There were people saying they were crying and that this ruined their Christmas holiday. It was so funny. Did you read the crazy conspiracy theory with the idiot who doesn't understand the economic crisis? |

Though it's probably another sign of how stale the show has become, nobody gives a shit anymore. I wonder if anybody who lives under a rock will show up in June wondering where Canadian Idol is? |

There was an article in the star and it's probably been covered on TV a bit too. You'd have to really be deep in a hole not to eventually find out.
Maybe some old grannies who watch might be in for a surprise though. |

I think if the show takes a 5 year hiatus and comes back then it might have some power again. But I still doubt it. I think it needs a Degrassi-esque leave
of absence to maybe get the fire and cultural impact it needs, a new generation who didn't see the show crash/burn.
Or perhaps change the name. Call it X Factor like they did for the UK. It completely changed their franchise and now the finale where Alexandra Burke won was the most watched show in the UK in 9 years. Also, they need to take it out of summer rotation, a fall Idol is best. SYTYCDK proved that you can have a Kanookian show in the fall and still pull ratings. The demos who watch the show will change accordingly. 5 year olds off from summer vacay and old people waiting to die after their life of wage slavery are not the demo you should be targeting. This has all been mentioned many times before so I'll just stop but I do hope they will change some aspects of the show if it is ever to be brought back which I think will be a snowballs chance in hell. |

I wonder if anybody who lives under a rock will show up in June wondering where Canadian Idol is?I doubt it. I could see somebody coming back in September wondering whatever happened to Canadian Idol. I will be one of those shows that no one notices it's gone until way after it was supposed to come back. |

If you think about the fact of how many people audition for the show itself, and how many people vote, I'm sure its safe to say that the show is quite
popular. But it is a really expensive show to produce. Even American Idol is stated to be getting rid of "Idol Gives Back" in their show. So, the
cancellation for this year is basically just because of the economy, not because of ratings or the winners.
If it does return for 2010, it would probably be a good thing for ratings, I'm sure. Many Canadians would be auditioning and watching, especially if it is gone for a year, and returns. I think its a good move to hold it off for a year. |

It's too bad AI stopped doing "Idol Gives Back." They could've given to Canadian Idol.

If you think about the fact of how many people audition for the show itself, and how many people vote,You seem to be operating under a false assumption that a large amount of people audition and vote for this show. Barely 1 million watch, and I would venture a guess that only a small percentage of those people actually vote, and an even smaller percentage vote in large quantities. As for audition turn out it's been pretty shit for the last little while as far as I know. 10 K tops. |
