It was always inevitable that it would turn into a game of numbers. The inherent drama came in the question, "Which sociopathic asshole is going to cross
that line first?" Ask 98% of the world in the summer of 2000, and they would have told you that answer.
For me, Pearl Islands is far and away my favorite overall season. From an entertainment standpoint, that season had everything. However, it is a bit gimmicky and chaotic when it comes to being a pure Survivor season, so I'd say that Marquesas is probably the best and most consistent overall. I have always said that when they show what Survivor was in encyclopedias 50-60 years down the road, Marquesas is probably the season they should use to illustrate it. That's about as textbook entertaining, well-edited Survivor as the show ever got. |

Marquesas also had a lot of good personalities to work with as far as being a great season went. Boston Rob is still probably the biggest asshole to ever play
this game (frankly, the stuff Corinne said was not nearly as bad as some of the stuff he said), Gabe was the incredibly happy-go-lucky kid that never gets cast
anymore, John went fucking batshit insane out there, and pretty much every other member of the cast had at least one great quote ("Sarah has a nice body.
She paid a lot for it" or "This sucks"). The casting for Marquesas was by far better than any other season.

Pearl Islands and then Marquesas. Book it, done. Survivor hasn't been able to match those two since.

Mario, Marquesas was great for the first 12 episodes but then the finale killed it for 2 reasons. The first one is the choose a stone tie breaker. I have
always though that someone being eliminated by random selection is odious especially since Paschal never had a single vote cast against him. Probst later
admitted in an interview that he screwed up and the tie breaker should have been the fire starting challenge that they have used in later seasons for final 4
ties. I see no reason why the fire starting challenge shouldn't be used for all ties whether they occur at final 4 or not.
The second thing that killed Marquesas for me is that Kathy didn't win. Instead the winner was someone who was pretty much a nonentity for most of the season which left me and much of the viewers feeling empty. I'm not an advocate of a Final 3, but with a Final 2 the person that wins the Final IC has too much power. Pre-merge, contestants are usually voted out for being weak or being social misfits. Post-merge, contestants are usually voted out because they are Immunity threats or because of numbers. With the Final 2, the last juror is usually voted out by the winner of the last IC because the winner believes that person is more deserving than the other person which just sucks. Instead of having a final 3, they could have fixed this problem by having the jury and the 10th place finisher vote out one of the 2 contestants that are not immune. The person that they vote out becomes the final juror and replaces the 10th place finisher. This change also would eliminate contestants opting out or co-opting out of the Final IC which is BS. This change would have allowed more fan favorites or great players who just failed to win the last IC to be the Sole Survivor and produce a more satisfying outcome overall. |

I wish Kathy had won, too, but a lot of times the greatest player is taken out before the Finals because everyone knows they're the greatest player.
The thing that kills me is even after countless fire starting challenges, people still threaten other players with a "pull the rock scenario." Even after Cirie lost a fire building challenge in Panama, she was the one that was convinced a colored rock would come up in Micronesia if she went to a tie in the final six. IDIOTS. |

Jesus..... I must be fucking bored for replying in this thread (and not bitching at the OP for not starting this thread in H.earts)
1) Micronesia (the tribal councils alone put this one way ahead... the magnificant female cast also helped) 2) Outback (human suffering the way it should be... great cast and great location. Enough drama for 3 Survivors) 3) Pearl Islands (Great strategy, great cast, great scenes. Fairplay and Rupert made this season) 4) Vanuatu (Great storyline... man vs. woman. While the women dominated 3/4 of the way through... a man pulling it out in the end made for a superb storyline. Hot woman cast also didn't hurt!) 5) China (I ranked this one higher bc for me it's highly memorable. Survivor coming back to form after MANY sub-par and shitty seasons. A Survivor "rebirth" if you will) 6) Guatemala (Loved the location and the survival. The first episode was undoubtedly the best opener in Survivor history. StepheME) 7) Amazon (Love the strategy and the location... Rob C showed Survivor fans what true strategy and manipulation was... then of course came All Stars) 8) Borneo (The original... but IMO far from the best. The kinks were being worked out and at the time I wasn't as "into" Survivor as I am now. Didn't reek of greatness when I first watched it) 9) Marquesas (Kathy and Rob M kept this season from being ranked in the bottom 10 of my list. Great characters but one SHITTY ending. Vecepia and Neleh? Really??) 10) Cook Islands (An OK cast... but the physical rivalry between Ozzy and Yul kept this one interesting enough to land it in my top 10) 11) Palau (Had the makings of a great season... but who didn't know that Tom would win? The Pagonging hurt the ranking of this season) 12) Thailand (The only bright spot in this shit filled season.... Lord and Master Brian Heidik) 13) All-Stars (Great cast.... BAD results. As funny as some scenes were (Twatwaffle added much humor) I just felt uncomfortable watching it) 14) Figi, Africa, Gabon, Panama (As much as I had tried... I couldn't muster any enthusiasm for these seasons... Survivor at it's worst) |

It's clear that the seasons before the HII have been more popular than those afterward.
Is that because the HII dilutes the final competitors? So that the final folks aren't just those who played the game well, but happened to stunble upon the idol? Or does the HII throw in a level of complexity that takes away from basic appeal of the game, i.e. I can't vote for him because he might have the HII? Or some other HII factor? |

The HII seasons are hated because they just weren't as good as the early ones, regardless of the HII. China and Micronesia are the exceptions to this rule,
but generally speaking, EI, CI, Fiji, and Gabon were just weak seasons for a variety of reasons:
1) Weak casting. All of these seasons had incredibly weak casts. Cirie and Penner were the only really great characters of these seasons, and everyone else falls short somewhere (either in entertainment or gameplay or getting a shit edit for being irrelevant because you got screwed over). By comparison, the earlier seasons had better character development and better characters. Pearl Islands, Marquesas, and Amazon probably had the best dynamics between the cast members, and all of the people really wanted to be there and were all really interesting because of the lack of recruits. I still remember all of the Marquesas cast from its original airing, but I barely remember half of the Fiji cast, which I just watched. And Sugar did a lot to ruin Gabon. She was a famewhoring mactor who gave the game to the worst player. 2) Excessive twists in these seasons. Not just the HII (which, in its EI and CI form, was completely overpowered and did contribute to ruining those seasons), but the need to have these ridiculous gimmicks to try to make things more interesting (the Have-have not twist of Fiji was the worst, but the Race twist and mutiny of CI, the age/gender twist of EI, and the double pickem and 2nd swap in Gabon just made these seasons a mess. By comparison, the early seasons only had 1 or 0 swaps, and the biggest twists were the delayed merge in Thailand and the Outcasts (which did make the season a lot more interesting, even if it was really unfair. Burton and Lill ended up being really important). |

Reasons Post-HII is worse than Pre-HII:
Increases in cast numbers, twists, convoluted storylines, decreases in character development and cast consistency. There's was just too much info to remember and not enough development to care. |

Borneo, Pearl Islands, and Micronesia were all consistently entertaining plus had satisfying winners. I loved the Guatemala and Exile Island cases (well, half
the cast of EI) but the winners were too underwhelming to rank it all-around great.
And I think I am the only person on the boards who doesn't get the Marquesas love. Pretty much everyone I know IRL stopped watching the show that season so I guess that could be a factor. |
