Believe me I am not making excuses for Joelle and she is not in my top 80% of reality tv show competitors but I don't see her as a villain who is doing
jack shit like some people are seeing her. I think the producers needed a "villain like" character and she is the only person giving any chance for
that type of edit.
I've always thought the phrase "fake it to you make it" meant more of "I have no idea what the hell I'm doing but I'm going to do
whatever I can until I do make it". I guess other people see it as "I'm not going to try and am just going to get by by doing whatever."
Very subjective statement and depending on how you feel about the Joelle/Bob situation, you will lean one way more than the other.
Hopefully Joelle ends up being a success story and not a disappointment. We shall see in the next few weeks!

I agree that I hope she has success. Even when there's people on the show I don't like, I'll root for them to succeed, just not win. I think my
problem with the "fake it until you make it" (if it was meant to mean she has no idea what she's doing) is that this is the time to not fake it.
You have doctors, a gym, nutritionists, and trainers at your disposal. Ask the damn questions, especially since you don't know how long you'll be
there.

I don't see Joelle as a villian. I see her as being someone who doesn't belong on this show. She clearly is not mentally to the place where she's
motivated to lose the weight. She seems to be there for the money so don't give her a pat on the back for not taking the $25,000 because seeing the greed
in her eyes as that temptation offer was dangled in front of her made me realize that she wants to get her pudgy little hands on the big prize. The woman is
skating by on as little effort as she can get away with and whomever said she uses the motivational phrases she sputters as a smokescreen is SO on track.
If I were training Joelle I would get frustrated and yell at her too. I think Bob tried to get through to her with the one on one talk, but he probably realizes (based on his years of experience dealing with fatties) that she's a lost cause right now until she gets herself mentally straight. It probably makes him frustrated that Joelle is taking the spot on this show when there's thousands of people who want it and is ready to do the work for it. |

I don't see her as a villain either. Just as somebody who isn't willing to do everything possible to meet her goals. I don't know how you can
interpret her "fake it till you make it" statement any other way than she's trying to make it look like she's working. Certainly she's
doing more than she was at home. She was working harder than I do at my workouts but I'm also not on a show where the whole purpose is to lose weight and
work yourself silly at the gym.

She's a "villain" only in the sense that the editors wanted to make the emotional punch of Jerry having to go home (instead of Joelle) even more
effective. Whether the editors continue to portray her poorly or "redeem" her probably depends in large part how long she lasts.

First of all Bob going off on anyone is exciting drama so no matter who it was, it would make the show. In someways it is the story of the women who sent Bob
off the deep end and then "miraculously" redeem herself by the end. I don't think Joelle is a bad person. Vicky & Heba were awful horrible
people and it showed. I have been overweight most of my life. I have lost and gained some of it back. MY parents feel guilty that they had a hand in it. But I
am primarily the reason that I am overweight. It can take a long time for some people to take ownership of that. I didn't for a long time. Even if you take
ownership it is even harder to take the actual steps to fixing the problem. A lot of reprogramming. Joelle admits that she is her biggest obstacle and I often
think that of myself. I have the tools to do it, but I have a few hurdles that I need to face to be completely successful. Some people just don't what to
do exercise wise & some don't know how to eat properly and some have trouble with combining the two. But when alot of it is emotionally connected it is
a lot harder to face.

This is a tough crowd. Have you spent your entire life believing you are a failure? Imagine that you had. Imagine now that you suddenly have to believe you can
do anything you want to do. Do you think a magic wand is waved and now suddenly you are a success? A lot of people who have never experienced a success are
scared to try...so they cover for themselves by not trying very hard - that way you can tell yourself you're not REALLY a failure...you just didn't try
hard enough.
Now, please go out there and run an ironman triathlon tomorrow. You know how to ride a bike don't you - everyone learns that when they are a kid. You can run, right? and swim? Let us know how it goes. |

Yes, because doing a triathlon is EXACTLY the same as fucking using your brain to figure out that eating enough to feed a small family will make you fat.

Starr has a good point. I work with a nurse who eats a salad at lunch because she is on a "diet". She has bacon, cheese, eggs, and lots of ranch dressing. She drinks a soda and eats it with those butter crackers. |

Seriously, it's not even like you can compare running a fucking marathon (or whatever) with eating healthy or what Bob asked Joelle to do. Bob asked Joelle to not be a quitter. He wanted her to push herself past her limits and try. If she failed, I don't think Bob would've cared at all (in a negative way). Everyone on the show has failed and will fail while on the ranch. When you're on a show like this and not willing to try, then yeah, you're a failure. |

If you think you are pre-disposed to being fat, that just means you have to work harder than most people. It doesn't mean you are incapable of being healthy. First step to losing weight - STOP THE FUCKING EXCUSES. As soon as you master this step, the weight will drop off very quickly. |

To cassandratoo: To some extent I get your point about always being a failure. And maybe some of the contestants have never succeeded at anything, not
matter how hard they try. But, that doesn't apply to most of the contestants that have been on this show. For example, we've seen doctors and other
highly educated persons. You're hardly a failure at life if you get through medical school, even if you're extremely overweight. Plus, many of the
contestants on this show basically like themselves--they just don't like the fact that they've allowed themselves to get to this point weight-wise. To
me, it's pretty clear that the woman who's left from the green team (horrible with names, sorry) basically has a positive self image. She likes who she
is, she's just having difficulty getting down the right road. Same with the white team--they're happy people who have led full lives, but just needed
to get healthier so they can enjoy their last years with their grandkids.

I have looked on line at the listings, it is not pre-empted. The only station that won't have regular programming is ABC.
I didn't mean to create such hostility with my comment about not knowing how to eat well. Have the people who are getting hostile ever been over weight to understand how hard it really is to reprogram? I do admit that I cringed when Dan's friend had hot dogs and french fries the minute he got back. He at that point knew better and you can always get a salad at a fast food restaurant. So he is leaving it all to Dan. As for the its in my genetics excuse, I've been there. It was a great way to cover the crappy eating. "It's in my make-up, so it's not my fault!" I agree that it is lame, but I admit I did it. I don't think that it is an excuse at all. If you know there is a genetic predisposition, that makes it all the more important to work to avoid it. I know that my children when I have them will have to probably work harder than some, but you can be damn sure that I will do everything in my power to stop the insanity! |
