Taylor Hicks can't sing and obviously wouldn't have any post-Idol success, yet he still won.

Anoop is marketable. His UNC vids prove it... the ladies love the guy and he seems like a genuine dude who people (like I am already) will want to root for in
Idol and in the industry. On top of all that, the kid can really sing.
Right now I am just worried about him cracking the Top 12. Worrying about whether or not people are gonna dig his 1st album is a problem I'll be looking forward to.

This is from a few pages back, but I wanted to comment:
Are you nuts? Season 3 is exactly why this system sucks ass! People like Jennifer Hudson DON'T make it in in their groups (thank goodness for WildCard) because the talent is badly stacked while shitty people like Camille and Fatt make it through because there just isn't anybody good in their group... I love how the arguments against the group format always mention the groups can be stacked and people like Matt Rogers advance simply because their group sucks. Yes, that's true... but if it was a top 24 format, Matt would 100% be in the top 12 anyway. The only possible way Matt could have been in the top 12 with the group format was if he was in Group 2. Any other group... goodbye. There was a strong chance he would never have been in the 12 that year.... he had a 75% chance of NOT making it.... but there is 100% of a chance he would with a top 24 format (since 6 guys are guaranteed to make it). If season 3 had a top 24 format... you'd have somebody like one of the Roman brothers or Jonah Monanu getting in the top 12 just beacuse there is room for 6 guys. One of those wasted "6 guy" slots would have prevented somebody like Jennifer Hudson from getting in... and I truly believe if season 3 had a top 24 format Jennifer would not have gotten in... she had a very weak fanbse at the beginning... she lost the semifinal viewer vote TWICE... and she was in the bottom 2 the very first week of the top 12. Only 6 girls would would have made it with a top 24 format. That's why I LOVE the group format so much better. But anyway, I think it's 100% a lock Danny and Anoop are getting in. It's just a matter of which girl will join them... I'm betting Jacky, but think Stevie has a good chance as well. But I hope Tatinia gets it just for the entertainment value! |

My guess for these 12 singing hopefuls make it to finals:
1 - Anoop 2 - Ann Marie 3 - Danny or Tatiana |

They go on and on about whether or not singers are relevant and then send home people like Jamar and Lenesha. uh, ok. |

Better yet, have the top 24 sing 3 weeks straight without eliminating ANYBODY, then cut half of them based on cumulative votes. That way, nobody makes it in based on one "good" performance or goes home based on one bad one... |

Take out Camille and Leah LaBelle and add in Marque Lynche and Matt Metzger (who should've made it anyway), substitute Lisa Leuschner for Amy Adams (or maybe Jasmine after people realized she actually sucked) and you have the top 12 that we really should have had, using the old format. Really, I would love to trade John Stevens for Katie Webber, and JPL for Suzie Vulaca, too, but that would never happen, obviously. Anoop isn't a lock. He's had decent performances in Hollywood, but nothing amazing. I barely remember he's even a part of the show - and I'm all for the great singers, even if they're fuck me right now hot, or not. While he may be "amazing" to his home crowd, that doesn't mean America is going to love him. Sarver and Gokey are clearly the pimped boys in group 1. I see Anoop MAYBE making it the wild card round, but not in the first group. |

I think the best way to do it is have a top 24... regardless of gender, just the 24 best singers. Split them into 2 groups of 12... each week, the top 2 from each group get into the top 12. Over 3 weeks, there's your 12. I don't think there will ever be a 100% fair way to choose the finalists. Each format has their faults and advantages. But I am happy after 4 years of the top 24 we're switching back to groups. |

In the past, has AI ever stated that the groups are selected randomly? Just curious.

I don't think the airtime prior to the semis will be as important as people think, because with 36 semifinalists, I can't even keep everybody streight;
the public won't be able to either. I think it really comes down to a combination of (in descending order of importance) 1) how well they sing 2) how well
the judges TELL us they sang 3) miscellaneous things on semis night (their interview, what spot they sang in, how well they looked, how well everybody ELSE
did, etc) and 4) the public's pre-semis memory of them. In other words, if Danny Gokey or Anoop Desai bombs, forgets his lyrics, or otherwise makes a fool
of himself, he WON'T be voted through just because reason #4 was a plus for him (though I think he'd then be a lock to make it to Wildcard night).
Similarly, if most of the men or women have a rough night, unpimped contestant X from that gender [pick whoever fits this] could slip through. Almost anybody,
no matter how untalented, can have ONE good night; think of Sanjaya singing Besame Mucho, Scott singing On Broadway, or most relevantly, Jon Peter Lewis
singing A Little Less Conversation.

Also: if season 3 had the top 24 format, I think Jennifer was good enough, even in the beginning, to NOT be one of the bottom 2 women on any week, and get
voted thru to the top 12. HOWEVER, she might not have been picked for the top 24 at all! Because of the nonexistent male talent, season 3 had 20 women and only
12 male semifinalists. So Jennifer might have been one of the 8 left behind (along with such other talents as Bree the dyke, Kara Master Bates, etc).
If they HAD insisted on 6 women and 6 men in the season 3 top 12, we would have been treated to the likes of people like Matt Metzger (good looking, but not a good singer--sorry) or Marque Lynch in the top 12. Not a pleasant prospect, even with Leah gone. It would have been a month before any woman was in the bottom 3. But the idea that Jonah Moananu or the Roman brothers would have made it to the top 12 is insane, even in that horrible a season. |
