There is pitching in and working a few hours and there is firing your entire staff because your kids will work for free. My husband worked at his parents restaurant growing up and his parents paid him--directly into his college fund which they then used as a tax writeoff but it was still his money--he got a full ride to college so we used it as a downpayment to buy a house.
