(1) I don't think we're supposed to hate the people around Candace. Especially when they aren't even aligned, Erinn just happened to be the one
Candace was confiding in...it was not editorial manipulation. They needed to get Candace's statements, and she was telling Erinn. (2) She didn't shoot
anything down. She had a facial reaction that Jeff called out...then she made a very reasonable, insightful observation (that most fans of the show would agree
with).

Erinn: Just because we've bonded with that person doesn't mean that's who they really are.
In Episode One, Erinn herself misjudges Tyson. Tyson also says to Candace "I just lied to you and you totally ate it up." I think this subtley works in Tyson's favor: NOBODY knows who he really is: his first impression is concealing his true intentions. |

That's Taj's secret foursome referred to in the preview.Seem to me that she was high fiving someone on Exile so not sure this secret foursome would consist of herself and three members from her own tribe. |

It's the timing for Erinn that is suspect. Take someone like Brianna and Brooke from Guat, Rita from Fiji, and Jacquie and Kelly from Gabon. All were
terribly neglected prior to their boot. Such has not been the case with Erinn. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying she is our chosen one to win, I just
think we should consider her VERY careful and selective editing. She was particularly chosen to speak in the opening about impressions, showing a duality of
opinions. She also talked about HER being in the game and her background. She was particularly shown discussing the boot with Coach and Tyson as well as with
Candace. All or some of these scenes could have been cut. It was carefully put in there for a reason.
It may be that she becomes important and then gets cut off or that she is a long-termer. In any case, I remember all the fuss about Alexis who fizzled. If Erinn fizzles next episode, she'll fall WAY down. If not, she's still a contender. But not nearly as strong of a contender that Sierra or Tyson are from her tribe. They could both have major cool downs and be okay. Hell, Sierra could almost be INV next episode and still be okay. |

Am more convinced than ever that overcoming first impressions will be the key to how this season pans out, much in the way Parvati overcame previous
impressions from Cook Islands to win in Micronesia.
There is potential for several people to be shown as overcoming perceived negative traits which might have hurt them: Obviously, Sierra & Sandy; many others as well. However, the ones which seem to me to be highlighted by the editing in a most interesting way have been Stephen and JT. Not only have they already been shown to overcome the misgivings of each for the other to form an alliance of sorts, Stephen has been shown as overcoming specific personal fears about how how he was going to be perceived. When the editors use valuable first episode time to have Stephen tell us that his fear is that he'll fall over in a challenge and get voted out we knew that it meant something, just as Kenny's first episode geekiness last season signalled personal growth; just like Crystal's words of smugness signalled the opposite. Whether Stephen's challenge win was only a short-term pay-off for last week or indicative of something much more lasting remains to be seen. It'll be fun to watch. |

Awesome episode. This is why I love Survivor.
JT: He was pointed out as the leader. Going along with his previous episode, he seems to be in it for the long run, but Stephen's confessionals concerning their relationship suggest that Stephen is a more viable candidate than JT. Overall: MOR2 Joe: Joe ate some bugs. Joe seems like a nice guy, but the preview suggests due to Taj's new alliance, he and Sydney soon get eliminated for being outside an alliance Overall: UTR2 Sandy: Great cooldown for such an OTT character. She had to be shown, and she's popping out winner quotes like its nobody's
business. Still unlikely to win, but she's a darkhorse that we cannot eliminate yet. For some reason, I felt all the overcoming/wanting to be part of the
tribe stuff made her seem positve, but I understand neutral. Overall: MORP2
Stephen: Stephen is overcoming his first impressions in regards to JT. His edit suggest longevity due to the fact that he has bonds and has been shown in personal scenes (the fishing scene further established the whole city boy/southern boy diatomic, suggesting they both go further) Overall: CPP3 Sydney: She's a goner. She performed well in the challenge, but was only shown discussing bugs. My pick for the next boot. Overall: UTR2 Taj: Taj could turn into the lovable fan favorite, and she knows she's on the outs and will seek to overcome. The preview suggests she does this, and that the whole money thing may come up later as a reason to boot her, but its too early to do that. It's early enough that her confessionals and understanding of her place on the tribe denote a CP. Overall: CPP4
Brendan: If he had had a better opening, he would be a huge winner pick. He decieved his tribe, but this was percieved as a smart move, not a dirty move. He might be the real snake, but it was Candace who was called out. He is defintely going to be a player, but I'm not sure if he can overcome a weaker opening. Overall: CP5 Candace: Candace was shown to be negative the entire time. She was shown as strong, but she didn't have the social gameplay. The fact that she didn't even align with Erinn shows weakness strategically. Still the fact that Erinn was shown with Candace only shows the editor's manipulation to have a decoy boot in Sierra. In my mind, Candace although understanding what was going on, was too one noted to be complex. I'll stick her in the same boat as Coach with a MORN5. Debra: What an annoying character. She seems like a positve person who got tied up with the wrong person (Coach) Her stupidity about the idol showed her as a positive person, but really she's not too sharp. Her comments at tribal council and tattle tailing on Candace show more reason that her trusting nature will be her demise. She could be negative, the positive was drowned out, but overall I think she was a neutral character being set up for a premerge fall. Overall: UTR2 Erinn: Reading here, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who kept seeing Erinn, Erinn, Erinn. She had no confessionals, but I don't
think they were needed. When Sierra/Brendan went to go find the clue, Erinn saw them sneak off. When Ben was contemplating voting out Candace, Erinn saw him.
She was constantly shown as surveying her surroundings, and her comments at tribal council reinforced that she knows how to play the game. Her conenction with
Candace was simply used to showcase a decoy boot in Sierra. Erinn performed pretty poorly in the challenge, but this was never brought up. Her comment about
the boot suggests that she is paying attention. Either she mutinies or wins, but Erinn is a key player in this season. (Watch her go INV next episode). A great
UTR edit in that she was not under utilized, but hidden! Overall: UTR2
Sierra: I'm not too sure she warranted a positive this time, but she is certainly the underdog. Like Eliza, she seems to be the constant target, but like Vanuatu Eliza, I can see her going far. She has had a lot of airtime, and is a major contender for not being shown as stupid, but being a woman who has a lot of airtime. Overall: CP4 Tyson: Who is Tyson? I have no clue who he really is, but this might be a good thing. He seems to be analyzing things, and might turn on Coach. He's still a contender. Overall: UTR2
Contenders 1. Sierra 2. Tyson 3. Erinn 4. Jerry 5. Stephen 6. Spencer

I like the potential for this season a lot. But trying to ween myself off -and I record these shows on DVD and last night when I went to edit out the
commericals for the first episode, I somehow erased the first part of the first episode. And we all know how I hang my answers to those first moments.

Why after 18 seasons are contestants still arguing about how to cook rice?Good question. Here's another: Why after 18 seasons do early boots still tell the camera that their tribe is going to regret booting them? The tribe never regrets it, and the bootees just reinforce how clueless they are about how they're perceived by others. Brendan CP5: It will be interesting to see going forward whether he's portrayed as a master strategist or as a betrayer. Candace CPN5: See question above. Coach OTTN4: "It's my job to be an asshole." Debbie UTRN2: Coach's toady Erinn MOR3: I don't understand her edit and I can't remember how to spell her name. Jerry UTR2: So Jerry, do you think the game has begun? "Yep, the game has definitely begun." What do you think about the Red Sox's chances this year? "I think they definitely have a chance this year." Joe UTR2: Just go home, Joe. JT MORP3: All right, JT and Stephen, now we're getting somewhere. Sandy UTR3: Please have mercy on me and boot her soon. Sierra CP4: Getting lots of attention early, so she's either going home soon or will be around for the duration. Spencer UTRP2: Narrator alert; his chances plummet. Stephen CP3: Is he Earl or is he Coby? Sydney UTR1 Taj CPP4: Probably goes far, but doesn't win, given the relative neglect of her in ep 1. Tyson CP3: interesting scene with Jerry; I'm expecting Tyson to be a minor villain (to Coach's major villain). Looking good after 2 eps: Brendan, JT, Stephen I like the potential for this season a lot. But trying to ween myself offResistance is futile. |

Bits a Bites
• In the recap, when they reviewed who was "voted out" due to first impressions, they showed Coach give his Sierra vote and Stephen gave a Sandy vote for Jalapao. They had everyone to pick from; did they pick due to the character making the vote (leaning yes) or because both their responses were the best/shortest available for a quick recap (very possible). • Spencer is coming across as a very eager, maybe too eager player, and is falling far down on my winner list. In the pre-credits, after-tribal scene that opened the episode, he again got a narration confessional, this time talking about how Carolina and Sandy just switched places and that Sandy is still the next to go. Last episode, he said Sandy was a goner, then changed his mind; now again he may be jumping the gun. If Sandy is spared again next Jalapao TC and instead we get a Taj, Sydney or Joe boot, I see Spencer's chances as close to dead. He is nice, but if his word starts looking consistently poor, I can't see him as a future winner. In the termites scene after the credits, he gets another confessional again about learning to adapt to the environment and needing food. • I love Jalapao. I have a terrible feeling we'll have a Timbira winner, but Jalapao is just a very likeable group of people. Timbira, meanwhile, has a group of interesting but less engaging people. Brendan really shot up in my estimation, but his Ep. 1 presence was too reliant on Coach and his douchebagerry. Possible F3 loss due to him having money? I wouldn't doubt it. • Jalapao struck fire back at camp the night of TC, their first time with flint. Timbira, after the lighthearted Jalapao scene, are shown unsuccessful in lighting a fire. Does this set up their team as losers this week or is it more than that? What does this mean? It feels deliberate. • Sierra: do they have to or are they building her up deliberately? Every step of her HII process was narrated by her, with her explaining exactly why she told Brendan, how she feels on her tribe, and why she doesn't want to search anymore. Candace, even if I did sort of like her attitude toward Coach, was kind of a beyotch when foolish Debbie (who I am giving M or neut. to now-not N, even if I hate her very much) revealed the fire pit, and she wanted to talk crap instead (which earned an eye roll from our dear, sweet Sierra). • Coach and Candace are both N, but wow, Coach is an amazing douche. Candace was an edited N while Coach would be N no matter if they tried to hide hit, IMO. She got a great confessional about what she feels Coach's psyche is, and then it was followed by a uhg-inducing smarmy "kissing" scene. "That man has an ego bigger than Brazil. That will be the death of him. His ego." Book it! That, coupled with Coach's Ep. 1 confessional about finding an opponent worthy enough to defeat him (Brendan!) telegraphs an eventual, humiliating downfall. Maybe not by Sierra anymore, but Brendan will be there. • Taj is married to Eddie George! Omg canyoubeleive it? Spencer and J.T. can't believe they are living with the wife of a football star, and Stephen doesn't care or know how he is. I'm with Stephen on this one. Now, we have to see how Taj's storyline evolves-does she go back to Exile and eventually mutiny? What is the secret alliance? |

I am still not seeing all the Erinnlove here. Based on edgic she is pretty meh. Oh, lots of "glances" and visuals of her sorta looking at
something. So could somebody dissect her edit so far in terms of edgic standards? And if anyone mentions "Bob" in their explanation I will be very
cross.

In regards to Erinn...
The whole reason I consider her a major contender is that she hasn't played a huge role in the story yet, but still has gotten significant air time. She had the first opening confessional, as well as a later premiere confessional explaining who she was. Although she described herself as not knowing why she was out there, in my opinion, in a season dealing with first impressions and overcoming them, this coupled with Tyson's bitch comment give her significant room to grow. Secondly, like Parvati, she recieved many reaction shots and her comments at the last tribal council were both coherent/intelligent, but also spelled doom for Coach and Debbie who are too trusting. Finally, although under the radar, its hard not to notice the amount of time the camera focuses on showing Erinn viewing people going off and discussing things. Her question this episode to Coach about the change in the boot shows that she realized something was up, and her vote showed that she's in the know. She's still not my top pick, but she's been editted a lot more than the typical brunette who nromally would have been INV by now. Editted for one final though- I consider Timbira to be the more complex tribe as everything isn't incredibly positive/bland like on Jalapao, so Erinn gets a boost for being one of the major contenders on that tribe (along with Jerry, Tyson, Brendan, and Sierra) |

FallenTorch, thanks. To distill what you said: She hasn't been a part of the story, she's had a couple of confessionals (which showed her slightly
clueless), lots of reaction shots, and voted as part of the unanimous block. Oh - she also hasn't been INV.
I'm delighted you didn't mention Bob. So to all the other Erinn fans - is that the gist of the pro-Erinn argument? |

scepticA wrote: I'm sure someone could articulate what I meant better, but the fact that she hasn't been a critical piece of any part of the story- but is still being shown as moderately imporant- suggests editting. I know her edit is all over the place, and that is one of the reasons I view her as a contender- simply because her edit right now is so different from the normal premerge boots which is what I had her pegged for preseason. It may not be anything, which is why she isn't my top pick, but she's certainly in a better position than anyone without an opening confessional/heavy editting. |
