Jeff went on Bonnie Hunt's show saying Coach is the underdog, his favorite player ever, and so on.
I think on paper, Jeff probably did believe Coach was going to be awesome. Not awesome as in an unintentionally hilarious loser, but a motivator, a warrior, a manly man who likes to pose. All of this is what Jeff sees as the ideal player. So I don't know if Jeff is laughing at Coach or not. I think deep down he still wants Coach (and probably Tyson) to be seen as the main forces.
