That deep gravely smoke aged voice is displacing, but effective. Thank god the -an bros didn't go, they were the eye candy. I think the level of chefs here is more Hell's kitchen than top chef, but I am liking the confrontation already. The two arguing were semi intelligent and both held their own. I like it!

Hopefully, we've seen the last of contestants just giving up and leaving. Marco needs to wash and cut his hair, and maybe start bathing on a regular basis. Gross.

Hopefully subsequent ones will be better. Still, the whole premise seems flawed. When different contestants do totally different things, it's hard to come up with a "fair" elimination...

I swear that early on, they even said "coming up -- blah blah" and then there was no commercial break. I didn't feel invested in the characters at all. and the rules, white's background, the restaurant openings, were skimmed over like a kid reading "war and peace" the night before his book report's due. I had a lotta hope for this show, after being disappointed in the outcome of Top Chef and hating, hating the foul-minded and foul-looking casts GR dredges up from the gutter for Hell's Kitchen...

Knowing Marco from before, it didn't bother me, but it might new viewers. One hour wasn't a lot of time to build up Marco's rep and intro the contestant's characters. The pompous fat one with the white hair. I don't remember his name. All food critics come off as pompous. Couldn't stand the critic in the last episode.

It just seemed all mashed up together, like someone was trying to get creative, but it didn't quite work. For instance that scene where the contestants need to get food out of the trucks. Were they getting food just for the "signature dish" preparation, or for the first night's service? And the cutaways to White talking about staying cool were overdone. Maybe it was originally planned to be a 2 hour premiere and then they chopped it down to 1 hour? Compared to Last Restaurant Standing, (which I still believe this is a rip-off of) this totally sucked, but I'll give it at least one more episode before I bail on the show.

Yeah, there's a difference in the degree of difficulty, but they're at least all chefs. I hate when Gordo makes them act as waiters, then bases ANYTHING to do with the winner or the elimination on their performance as waiters. It's just stupid! And I hate restaurant wars on Top Chef. It's my least favorite episode every single year. It's so wrong to me that if a chef has the balls to step up and be the team leader, they have an exponentially higher probability of going home. Every other chef in the kitchen is inevitably safe, and it comes down either to the head chef or the front-of-house person (who shouldn't even be considered for elimination on a cooking show).
