Independence Day by Martina McBride and/or Carrie Underwood
A Memphis girl with a southern accent, "The only country songs I ever heard have been on movies." Mmmkay. Randy tells her to slow it down "just a little bit" "so I can get my licks and my riffs in." Randy says she has big "pipes." It's a bit more uptempo in real life than it was in the clip, though. She's in that uncomfortable in-between tempo as far as I'm concerned. It's basically Carrie-speed, which is (I think) faster than she wanted it to be to hit all those "licks and riffs." And the arrangement sucks, too, going over the same melody twice. The pitch is all over the place until she hits the title line, then she just shouts her way through it. Uncomfortably pitchy on the top end. Shrill? [SarahPalin] You betcha! [/SarahPalin] The ending sounded okay until she broke the line to shout the word "day."
A 4, a 5 at best.
Randy: Yo! Yo yo! Lil Rounds! It was an ambitious song choice. In the front, struggling. By the time you hit the power chorus it got better. But it didn't feel comfortable on you. Just kind-of aiight.
Lil: R*B isn't the only thing I can sing. I just wanted to give it a go.
Randy: You could have chosen I Will Always Love You, How Do I Live ...
Lil: This song is relevant.
(There's that W O R D again.)
Kara: You're a great singer. You'd have to be deaf not to know that. Girl's hitting those notes in the sky. You missed that in the beginning. You stood your ground. I give you props. Not your best, but good for standing your ground.
Paula: Everything's right. Vocals spot on. Hair, clothing beautiful. It would have worked better if you only sang 1 verse instead of the 2, and gone straight for the chorus. You're one of the obvious favorites.
Simon: But stick to one verse? Look, Little.
Paula: Little?
Simon: Little, Lil. Okay. Little. Lil.
Lil: This is a learning process for all of us.
Simon: May I talk, Little? When you take a John Montgomery song and turn it into something that suits you.
Poler: How about Stand By Your Man?
Simon: No.
