The only thing I remember about the Gabon recap was that ridiculous "underdog" story they tried to feed the viewers (I believe six of the final seven
were supposed to be underdogs

I loved the recap's flavor this season. Usually it's so bland with an extra scene of someone snoring, plus a snake. Well, we got the snake this
time, but so much more.
BUT edgically...we'll drive ourselves nuts if we go over all this again (don't we argue the same things every season? It is viable it isn't viable it is viable it isn't viable aaaaaaah). It's not viable...even if it is interesting. The only perspective I have on it that tangents edgic is that the recap's a great opportunity to pull out some "other stuff" that isn't critical to the story. A good example is that Sierra finding a good perspective on Coach - not necessary to the story, but made a good vignette for the recap. |

JT and Tyson got, also, good recaps imo. Tyson was used more because he gave funny confessionals, while JT can be transformed in the new Rupert So, what sort of edit do people think Rupert would have gotten if he won? |

Everybody usually compares JT with Tom W, though Koror went to only one TC pre-"merge" while Jalapão went to three already. |

Yeah, I thought the recap was actually pretty fresh and interesting this season. Funny too.
Nice, zippy run- through of the boots and a cool sunrise out of the snuffed torch. that ridiculous "underdog" story they tried to feed the viewers That's the Edgic use of the recap: Looking for how they repackage, re-run, or omit what we've already been shown. |

On that note
Jeff repeats that first impressions are everything. Erinn talks about first impressions in general, Brendan talks about how he tries to avoid first impressions, Debbie talks Sierra, Sierra talks herself, Tyson talks Coach, Coach talks himself. Then Stephen talks Coach and then Stephen talks Sydney and Sydney talks herself. Is Sydney being rebranded because she's going next or going far? I guess it doesn't matter since she's not winning either way. Joe talks JT. JT talks himself. Nothing concerning Taj. The only ignored character in the revisit to the beginning. Lot's of contestants commented on each other, the only two to get a segment not specifically about someone else or themselves is Erinn (the importance of first impressions) and Brendan (the unimportance of first impressions). JT was the only one who mentioned winning. I wonder if it means anything. |

I'm not sure if we can really make judgments from the recap if the most omnipresent people were the ghosts from episodes 1-5 and the least visible person
was the one who seemed to us as the most likely to win.
But I will say that I am a bit more confused than I was before the recap for whatever it's worth (probably not much more than a wooden penny). |

Erinn's first confessional sealed the deal for me that she (should) be important to this game. A lot more important than people are giving her credit for.
She was seen again as the observer and as someone who has great insight into the game. The way she said the truck ride was a great way to size everyone up, etc. Sierra's quote about being on the truck really put me off as to her winning chances. "I didn't give a flying fuck what they thought about me." That added with the fumbling argument with Coach - not really being able to defend herself - leads me to think she will lose a jury vote if she's in a final 2 with Stephen, Tyson, Erinn, JT, whoever. Her speaking skills leave much to be desired. |

I finally saw the clip from the recRap. The "I don't give a beep" could be taken as meaning she's not bothered by what others think of her.
It could be a good thing.
However, it probably isn't. She came off very negatively in the recap for someone who has been portrayed as being a frontrunner. She suddenly took a MAJOR plummet that may not easily be recovered. A Stephen/Erinn final 2 seems more and more likely now. A Stephen/Sierra/Erinn final 3 seems likely if there are 3 finalists. |

Personally, I'm not putting much stock into the recap for 2 reasons. One, the two players most visible in the recap were the two least visible in the real
episodes (Debbie and Syd). Two, the CBS insider videos are presumably the last ones on the cutting board (unless I'm wrong about this assumption) so a) we
pay no attention edgically to the insider videos so why the recap and b) the clips from the recap were chosen from clips that were not even the last ones on
the cutting board for the real episodes.

Finally saw the recap.
IMO, JT is being set up as a fan favorite (it's working... I think he's the man!) Stephen has nothing negative to say about him and wants to stay loyal. If/When JT gets blindsided post-merge, Stephen smells like a rose. Stephen's edit looks really good to me. Meanwhile, Sierra hasn't put up w/ crap from Coach, but somehow rises above the Timbira politics (whereas Erinn and Tyson don't.) Sierra's edit looks really good to me. I won't be able to make a prediction I'm confident in until next week. And if my prediction does not win, I'm just gonna decide I suck at this and lurk next season, lol. Taj's recap edit to me showed an instability/vulnerability that has never come across before. Her edit has been highly manipulated... the audience will cry when she goes down like Cirie did (twice.)

I'm a little amazed at the Erinn support.
If anything, the recap gave her one of her worst confessionals of the season. She has called Coach a jackass, etc., in the past in scenes designed for us to agree with her. But in the recap, they play the symphony over Coach's conducting. It tells us that he knows what he is doing. And he tells us that he is doing it to entertain the bored and down tribe mates. Erinn's sneering put-downs this time are off-the-mark. The edit has set it up that way. To cap it off, they have her tell us how much she dislikes everyone on her tribe. This was a very bad episode for Erinn. |

Talk about subjective. Because music playing along with Coach's conducting = positive! ...
( Sorry to come off snide. Erinn had two great confessionals ... the opening one, and she gave insight as to her position on the tribe. Now, her second confessional is either setting her up as the winner OR setting her up as an important character that flips on Timbira post-merge. ) |

This was a very bad episode for Erinn. For a win, yes. For a spot in the finals, I think that it may help. To me, it helps to reinforce the Courtney (China)-Katie-Danielle resemblance in terms of editing. But in any case, we have something we haven't had in, well, longer than I can remember: Multiple Contenders. It's nice to see and a refreshing reminder of what Survivor used to feel like back in the day. |

I don't think Erinn was N at all, but just the fact that the only thing she's allowed to talk about is Coach/Tyson harms her in my eyes. Which is why
I like Sierra's chances, because I feel she rises above the Timbira group (so does Brendan, but his horrible episode 1 eliminates him for me.)

Don't green grasshopper me, cr! Lol.
It was more than just random music over Coach's baton waving. They played the exact piece he was pantomiming and it fit perfectly with his conducting. And they lead into the scene with Coach's thoughts on why he was doing it. As for that truck scene, I've got a different hypothetical to throw out:
If you ask me to give an explanation, I'd say that whole section was aimed at Sierra's story. Someone here asked if they give a big part of the recap to the winner. Well, maybe they did. |

Timbira Tribal Council 2: How Coach isn't the best leader. Confessional 5: Fluff, about Jalapao raiding Timbira. Confessional 6: How she doesn't relate to her tribe and WHY she's having a hard time. Recap Confessional 2: Sizing up the competition. Recap Confessional 3: Alpha male competition, fluff. Recap Confessional 4: Coach is a jackass Recap Confessional 4: but continues on to her position at Timbira and her urge to merge. So aside from a brief opening confessional on first impressions, she never even utters Tyson's name. His edit revolves more around her than hers does his. As for Coach: is three instances really that much compared to everything else? Erinn's edit revolves around herself more than anyone else. Breakdown, from a mathematical perspective: 60% about herself/Timbira/strategy. 20% Coach. 13% fluff. 7% Tyson. |

chapera rocks wrote: Thats whats driving me crazy too. I dont think Erinn has uttered the word "Tyson" the entire season...she only talked about him ONCE. And yet her edit is somehow revolving around him? No, its the other way around, Tyson's edit revolves around Erinn. I think some people have this "her edit only revolves around Coach/Tyson" fallacy in their head and are ignoring a lot of the rest of her edit. |

fat little fingers wrote: That could be absolutely their intent -- but one thing gives me pause. If I were an editor, I don't think I could resist adding in the appropriate classical music if I had someone on the show knowledgeable enough to describe the piece while mock-conducting it in tempo. It's just too cool to resist, even if that character is Coach. However, if I were concerned that this would make him too interesting or positive, I'd put in another character calling him a jackass, as a humorous contrast. And who's most likely to have footage calling him a jackass, and which conflict has already been established? Erinn all the way. So while it totally could be about contradicting Erinn, I think could just as likely be about this little stellar moment they wanted to put in but didn't want it to seem too positive. |
