And yes with Stephen. he doesn't neccessarily need any jury connections- or as strong as Sierra's and JT's- in order to win. There just needs to be someone in the final two for these themes and earlier underlined scenes to hang on. Danni for instance just got the Judd skating comment because it was all about Stephenie. The JT scene of calling Sierra a bitch or the shoot em all with my Winchester aren't really important to me. They are reported scenes and are colorful. if it's going to be important to the story an inserted close-up shot of Stephen or a musical underscore would be present for the viewer to note it and remember it. My problem with Erinn even making the end is how she is presented with her story. It seems she is supporting rather than leading a story. The episodes never kick off with her contemplating -always kind of sandwiched in between a chapter- her dramatic weight doesn't seem as heavy as JT, Stephen's or Sierra's.

Posts: 6097 (04/25/09 3:23 PM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Episode 9 Shows Why Stephen Wins Stephen and JT are the only serious winner contenders at this point that I can see. And since the merge or maybe an episode or two before, JT has been emerging as a real contender. But, after Episode 9, all the indicators point to Stephen outwitting and outplaying and finally outlasting JT and everyone else. Let's look at Ep9. This episode ties all the threads together. JT's first confessional of Ep9: "...Stephen and I, we've actually put ourselves in a really good position... Stephen and I decided who went home last night and we decided /break/ to stick through with the warrior alliance /break/ and Stephen and I /break/ after the way things are going, we're happy to see Sierra go next." Note the number of "Stephen and I" s. The edit stuffed this confessional full of them. This is a critical confessional that tells us why JT loses. JT's RC confessional, after telling the others that Stephen has to go to Exile: "Now Brendan's gone and his idol's outta play /break/ feel like there's a new idol on Exile, so Stephen needs to be on Exile /break/ to ensure that Sierra doesn't get the other idol if there's one placed out." This sounds like a great clue that JT might be our winner. It is insight to his understanding and outwitting the rest. Except that it is in partnership with Stephen. Note that he has mentioned Sierra for a second time. This will grow in importance. Stephen's confessional on Exile Island: "So I am /break/ hoping /break/ to find a clue to a new idol /break/ and I would end up with two idols in my possession." Compare this confessional to JT's other two. There is no "JT and I" in Stephen's statements. Most importantly, there never has. We know from all of his confessionals this season that Stephen is taking care of numero uno and every relationship he has formed has been a conscious choice to reach the win. Note, too, that Stephen is not focused on Sierra or anyone else. He is focused on the win. Sierra's warning to Debbie: "...Later down the road, there will be a moment when you regret this." This echoes Erinn's caution to Debbie in EP2 Tribal Council: Erinn, "We can talk all day about how much we get along and this and that and the other thing, but we don't know these people! We've known them for six days, but I don't know if the person I bonded with is really who they are. I just think we need to be careful." Debbie, "...that's how you really get to know someone." Erinn, "But, I don't know if that's how you get to trust someone." After the IC win by Debbie over Sierra, JT says: "I'm glad you won. That couldn't a worked out any better." Once again, we are reminded that JT' mind is focused on booting Sierra. Stephen to Erinn, "You're 100% with us, right?" Erinn, "Absolutely." There's that "100%" again. It's a big part of this season. Stephen convinces JT to switch voting from Sierra to Tyson: JT, "...I hate to make it this early and be stuck with Sierra." Stephen, "If we don't take out Tyson now, he could go on a run. It happens. It happens every season. Someone goes on a run. ... Let's make it you." JT thinks about it and laughs, "It'd be a lot safer, wouldn't it?!" Stephen, "Yeah!" JT, "Are they looking at you?" Stephen, "No. ...Sierra is." JT, "Sierra's a lyin' bitch! And I hate her!" Stephen echoes quickly, "I hate her too." JT, "I want her away from my face, dude!" This is the end of JT as a possible winner. Stephen is clearly running the show, while JT continues to be focused on his emotional reaction to Sierra, rather than on the game and the win. "...It'd be a lot safer..." Not. Tribal Council....... Sierra's speech about how the game isn't about personalities, it's about what gets you farther: "Uh, well, this is a game about strengths and weaknesses. It's not a personality contest. ...I wouldn't be voting him out because we're two people who didn't get along. It would be, I was voting him out, so that I could win... It's just the way that the game works." This is a key speech that distinguishes Stephen's play from JT's. Sierra is talking about Tyson, but we've had reminders all episode that JT is obsessed with hating and booting Sierra. JT is focused on the personalities and not "the way the game works." Jeff asks Coach if he believes JT. Coach, "...I believe 100%, when he tells me somethin'." There's that 100% again. Who else has stated numerous times that he trusts his partner 100%? Winner: Stephen.

It was a great episode for Stephen, but at the same time it rounded JT's character out quite well. On JT's gameplay: The scene where JT laments how awful Sierra is was added to the episode for suspense. If we thought JT/Stephen liked Sierra then their choice would be easier. However, they were shown as disliking her so the decision, going into tribal council, would be much less clear. It is key to remember that the editors have two stories to tell every episode: the story that starts and ends in the episode and the one that continues on till the winning vote is revealed. The brevity of the scene plus its placement directly before going to tribal council indicates to me that it was there primarily to build suspense. On the same note, let us look at the order of events: 1) JT dislikes Sierra 2) Stephen tells him booting Tyson would be a better game move (and I'm going to believe that Stephen/Erinn came up with this idea and not JT as a reality. I don't think the fact that Stephen had to tell JT this is an editorial hint to Stephen's win) 3) JT considers booting Tyson over Sierra, while reinforcing how awful Sierra is (in confessional, right before TC) 4) Sierra tells us that in order to win Survivor, you can't just vote out people you dislike. 5) People vote and the camera cuts to JT after. every. single. vote. is. cast. 6) Tyson is voted out. Not Sierra. What move did JT make? What move did the editors try to tell us JT made? The right one. He is in this to win it and not as a personality contest. The editors put all the doubt for this boot squarely on JT's disdain towards Sierra and then delivered with JT making the game-breaking decision. Now, moving onto the issue of JT's trust... well I'll have to look back at the two pre-merge episodes before I have a competent argument (I can formulate one for the first four episodes, but after that my mind goes blank). I do have a question though: when did JT say he trusted Stephen 100%? And was it really numerous times? ETA: Oh god, nevermind I found at least one point. It did make me a little nauseous. How about Erinn's quote about having to make moves for herself if she was going to win the game ... but mean while, episode after episode we are shown J.T. as the deciding vote, and Stephen is listening to whatever J.T. does. J.T. decided Spencer, Sydney, Brendan, Tyson. J.T. is making the moves for Stephen, not good for him. Tie that to the fact that in episode 1, Stephen's key confessional didn't set him up as a winner, but set up the JT/Stephen alliance ... and JT's confessional was about himself. First impressions are a bad thing this season, so perhaps not having an opening confessional about another player is a good thing? J.T. got an early confessional but not a first impression confessional. But the things that bother me about J.T.: his whole bean deal with stealing only 75 guns from Timbira; he was proven wrong by Sandy, and there was no need to include that. He was also edited as stupid when it came to trusting Stephen/Taj, saying they were 100% honest, even though they weren't in the previous scene. But IMO, Stephen is definitely second seat to J.T.

I needed to see their good game in the first half. First half of the season, Erinn was not speaking to the win or even the late game. Stephen is listening to whatever J.T. does. J.T. decided Spencer, Sydney, Brendan, Tyson. J.T. is making the moves for Stephen This is not correct. Just as Stephen lead JT to switch to Tyson from Sierra, he has lead the thought process in a number of their past discussions. The edit has made JT stand out as the big leader, but look closely at how decisions develop. Somewhere in their discussions, Stephen steers JT towards something that favors Stephen's agenda. There are certainly scenes that makes sense if JT is our winner. The way he is edited out of most of the pizza eating for one. But, Stephen's edit hasn't missed a beat. JT has issues of trust and being an out-front leader that need to be resolved for my being able to back him. Do you think going on an immunity run was his idea? Or that it's a "safe" plan for JT? Statements like that look like editorial bear traps to me.

While I think that Erinn's shortcomings have more to do with quantity, its no doubt that she's set up several themes this season (such as trust) and this quote is one of them ... my point in bringing it up was to showcase that JT trumps Stephen. The editors can't control how Stephen/JT's conversations go. One discussion, Stephen leads JT, in another, JT leads Stephen. But when inserting confessionals, especially in the last two episodes, JT has shown to be the one in the power position and the ones making the decisions that mold the game. It has been manipulated to be JT's idea, and using Erinn's quote, we can see that Stephen is letting JT decide moves for him. We do see Stephen trying to convince JT, which is fine, but why are we always led to believe that it was ultimately JT's decision? Because its probably not, but that's what the editors are telling us.

We still have the unnecessary pre merge sound byte of "angry Sierra" and the exhile moment where she has climbed from bottom to top (and now at the bottom again). And Erinn's confessional where she says "guity as charged" would indicate to me if Sierra didn't go in that episode that Sierra outlasts Erinn. We have Stephen comment on Sierra's dumb slip at the merge -did we really need any of this for filler? The only way I would see the '100%" quotes working for JT is if it's about him wising up and it being a pressure cooker between him and Stephen in the end. But then I think we would have any stronger confessionals from JT trusting Stephen and Stephne confessionals plotting against JT in theory -so we know JT is walking into a trap. Thus making it more dramatic when he survives. Rewatched the recap, and at the end they have so many scenes from future episodes. And what is interesting is they have Taj and JT focused on but carefully hide Stephen. And Sierra is given "you're such a liar!" I think an editing team would only show people succeeding or sticking around if they know they don't make the end game, or show them in danger or on shakey ground (Sierra/Stephen).

This is nothing new. It is the story being told throughout the season. JT is being put up front as The Decision Maker because at this point the editors want most people to think he is making the decisions. But really look at the way the Stephen\JT decision making process has been presented - only one of them is keeping information away from the other, and Stephen is also shown thinking about himself and HIS game first every single time ("JT could be in trouble, and that's bad FOR ME"). And in some magical way every time Stephen and JT have a "What do we do now?" chat, the outcome is always at least as beneficial for Stephen as it is to JT. The recap went through great lengths to show how scared Stephen was of Sydney, only to have JT make the decision to vote her out like… an episode later? It's too subtle to really be considered doubt for JT, I think, because the casual viewer does not remember such things or try to analyze the story. JT, however, is like a doubt-machine for Stephen. How can Stephen win when JT is so awesome and in control of everything? He's gonna win all the immunities! He's so fast! The only thing really bothering me about the JT\Stephen dynamic at the moment is the fact that JT is, starting I think from the Spencer boot, being shown as a fairly ruthless player. He doesn't even MISS A BEAT when he lies. It's kind of amazing. Not sure how that adds up for me right now.

He's like no one I would have ever met back at home and I think we are getting to know each other which is sort of surprising because he is the Alabama country boy, he's Tom Sawyer and I am the angsty city boy. He might be seducing me with his pretty country ways but I'm smitten." After showing Stephen how to tie a fishing hook, JT commented: "Stephen and I come from different walks of life." (Just then, Stephen was seen popping out of the water, his mask making him look like a nerd with really huge glasses!) JT's confessional went on: "We get along really well. We have a good friendship." Stephen concluded by telling us: "We had more luck in seeing fish than in catching the fish but I think our fishing trip was successful in cementing our friendship. I know that it makes me look like his goofy, awkward right hand man but if he thinks I'm the goofy awkward right hand man, he's going to want to keep me around longer."" (Copied from Editing Analysis Thread thanks to Panurge for having these transcripts) Stephen has already shown that JT is the one making the decisions. JT is the leader, and Stephen got in with him. Stephen has been the one that initiated the dialogue on their pairing, not JT. Stephen has the initial comments on not fitting in with JT. JT commented, but later. Since this confessional, Stephen has shown that while JT is in charge, by being his goofy right hand man, Stephen will never be the bigger threat. By taking the supporting role in their relationship, Stephen knows what he is doing, and it has been edited as so. So the question to ask ourselves- Is Stephen only the "smitten right hand man" or will Stephen take out JT? Or on a different note, will Stephen fail at being the right hand man and be perceived as the real threat? Will Sandy's first impression about him being lead around easily not only be proven wrong, but be proven so wrong that the others take him out for being the threat? Or will this perception continue to the finals where Stephen loses to JT? If First impressions are being proved wrong, and Stephen has shown that he cannot simply be lead around, how can he lose to JT? Still, tying in the ideas of the Family Final Four (from a totally different thread) if JT faces Stephen as the Father in a Father/Son Final 2, JT isn't supposed to lose. Tying in all these points, JT and Stephen cannot be the final 2, because thematically Stephen must win, while according to the ideas of the family final four, JT must win. Therefore one of them has to take the other one out… All season long the signs have been pointing to Stephen taking out JT, but this quote is reflective of say Brendan or Coach last season. All season long everyone has ogled about how great JT is, and Stephen has been no different. But will all of this ogling prevent JT from ever being taken out? Will Stephen betray JT? Or as stated before, will Stephen be taken out as the true threat? Only time will tell (Just some random musings)

Tyson talking about how she can't win and being mean to her will get him votes, Stephen saying Sierra is being stupid, her outburt at beangate, Tyson saying she's here for stupid people... I don't know, in the Viewer's mind there is no way Sierra can win. I'm not saying she'll win, but, if she makes F2 it would seem really unsuspenseful to see her lose. She's got a lot of underdog crafting. I think she outsmarts Stephen in the future. He's got that idol and he seemed pretty comfortable the last couple weeks... I don't know, JT gets the threat doubt but I think Stephen could get blindsided. I think it comes down to perception at this point. I'm sticking with JT and I see it that way. I can see JT's story taking off once Stephen goes. I think the editors are showing Stephen as pretty brilliant, but I don't see the winner craft, I cannot picture him as the person answering questions in the F2--rather the one asking the hard questions. I don't see anything spectacular in Stephen winning. I feel he's a minor character to JT's, but JT is strongly attached to him, and once he leaves, he'll have to think for himself. It's more of a gut-feeling. I could see Jeff asking Stephen at the reunion if JT is a smart guy and if he played it well and if he deserved it. With Stephen being so smart, any type of validation of JT would be well-received.

To put it shortly, I don't think JT is actually edited as being in control. I think the story being told is one in which Stephen is actually engineering all major vote outcomes. b) Well, who would realize? We could have JT who "trusts Stephen 100%" - good catch btw to who ever noticed the 100% thing - but is starting to emerge as a gamer, and in which case I read the season wrong. I'm just not seeing him catch on to Stephen. Now that Tyson's gone, the only one besides JT with an edited chance in hell to come to that conclusion is Erinn. And that would be very very interesting indeed. c) All First Impressions Are Wrong. And Stephen doesn't need to overcome his first impression, as he uses it to his advantage. And it is a calculated risk, such as any strategy at all, but I very much doubt JT goes on an immunity run to the finals. That would be so boring, and completely defeat the Momentum theme they have going. (Awesome. I agree with me too!)

Even as we are breaking down past contenders, we still have to discuss more than one person. It's kinda nice. In terms of the game itself, ya know what's odd? Coach could actually still take some control in the game if he knew what the hell he was doing. He screwed up-not by taking out Brenden so much but by getting onto Sierra the way he did. He could suck up and show humility by admitting that he was had the way Brenden was had. He can admit that he is in the same position that Sierra was in 3 days ago and express that he now knows how she felt. Touche-Brenden, Tyson, Coach, and Sierra were ALL screwed over by Jalapao and now it's time to regroup, reform, and rejuvenate old Timbira once and for all and forget about feelings and start thinking about the game. That's all easy to do and it's something that Yul would have/could have done beautifully. Coach's personality is SO flawed that he cannot do this. The minute Sierra waivers due to fear, he will freak out and revert to his condescending ways because he knows nothing else. For all the great social skills he thinks he has, he has almost none because he's living in a box. He will majorly screw next week's vote up AGAIN for Timbira, leading to either he, Deb, or Sierra's boot. Jalapao will once again take advantage of a dysfunctional Timbira and make it 3 on 3. Once it is 3 on 3, Timbira has no chance in hell. All they can do is force a tie vote. And with one idol still out, that's a dead end much more than risking a final 4 slot. Next week is the ONLY time Timbira has to change things up again. It's possible that some odd Timbira make it to the final 2 (if there is a final 2) by either immunity or choice (JT, Taj, or Stephen chooses to take them there), but not due to numbers. Had Tyson and Coach not been so intent on getting rid of Sierra and especially rubbing it into her face, they would not have been in such a bad situation. Suck it up and get rid of the other tribe. Coach may go down as the one of the worst players in Survivor history.

The problem is, of course, that Coach himself has obliterated any concept of Timbira as a viable group. He and Timbira ensured that Erinn felt alienated since early on - she has zero loyalty to them and only loyalty to herself (which, btw, is as it should be.) Probably the only way to get her on Coach/Debbie's side is to present her with a "here's how you get to the final 3 with us" strategy. She might actually respond to that, but I doubt Coach has that particular gene sequence in his misbegoten DNA. In fact, I think Debbie is the one who might be able to persuade her. (come to think of it, how does Erinn think she'll get to F3 with the Jambos?) Sierra is certainly unlikely to be persuaded by him almost regardless of what he says - your ideasare likely is only recourse, but let's face it. If he did the humble bunny routine with her right now it would be so obviously self serving that she'd probably laugh in his face (I'm not sure if she's capable of humor, having seen essentially zero evidence of it.) The problem is that they'd have to convince both of them, being down 5 to 2. Whatever would appeal to one won't to the other. I really don't know what they'd tell Erinn and Sierra right now, considering who coach is - he certainly doesn't seem to have any concept of Survivor as a game - he's playing his "Warriors of Tocantin" board game for real rather than any game in which JP is the host.

I think he excelled at some aspect of the social game because he had Debbie and Tyson as solid allies from day 1. But strategically he had nothing. Taking out Brendan when he did was pretty smart, but actually intending to be true to the alliance with JT and Stephen was not. It should have been BS that he was selling them. Final 8 was the time to take out a Jalapao... if it wasn't JT/Stephen, fine, take out Taj! You never had an alliance with her. I just don't get it... was he really going to take out Erinn before Taj? And not expect Erinn to simply go with the four Jalapao at F7? And have Stephen and JT happily accept 4th and 5th place? No matter who left at this tribal council (Sierra or Tyson), Coach was screwed. Seriously, how can you blow a 6-3 majority?

It's very risky (not to mention has very little to do with Edgic, barring the "I have to make big moves!" line), but if Erinn makes a move to take out Taj next week she'll literally be my favorite survivor of all times. She'll basically make herself essential to Stephen and JT, and able to force a tie next TC with Coach\Debee\Sierra, which should get Sierra to vote along. Plus she thinks Taj has the only idol left in the game. This can only happen if JT wins immunity, of course, but he probably will. And no, I have not yet thought of the dozen ways in which this is stupid. I'm sure they're out there but I think It'll still be kind of great.
