I don't like to admit it when Blake makes a point, :) but I do wonder how many of those early confessionals are recalled by average viewers, of which we ain't. To us the early confessional is a semi-holy grail in edgicland, and we note that skinny guy is named Stephen, glasses chick is Erinn, oldlady is etc. But I remember my pre-edgic days of watching survivor, and I'm hard-pressed to recall just about anything important (meaning: almost any early confessional) or who said it.

I'm trying to consider the first ep from that perspective, and frankly Tyson and Erinn (as individual named memorable players) would not be people I'd recall later even in that episode from their nice guy/bitch confessional pairing. I'd remember there was a girl, and maybe she wore glasses, and some strong young guy who used the "b" word. I'd probably recall the old lady, and perhaps (by pairing with the old lady) the skinny guy who was relieved he'd probably not be first voted out, but I'd put little importance on his comment. I'd remember the quiet girl, and that one or more people thought she was sick.

But that's all. The storytellers might want to put something very subtle in the opening minutes that has a huge payout in the penultimate or finale, but I actually find that hard to believe. Instead, they're just setting the groundwork for the immediate, and in this case it was the vote-out of Sandy and Sierra. In that perspective, the comment of Stephen has a wee bit more credence, because from this perspective Sandy was indeed the first person "voted out" - at least, that is exactly what the players thought was happening! Stephen said she'd be the first one to go, and that's how their tribe voted. It was only the hidden reveal of the vote that kept her around.

And this makes the Tyson/Erinn commentary far less significant. My guess is that they got this visibility because 1) the contradictory nature of their confessionals was amusing, and 2) they lasted long into the game. But to then use this as a reason that Tyson was voted out before Erinn, who will be F2 or the winner or whatever, is stretching the editorial evidence to paper-thinness.
