S1 - Kelly (TX) beat Justin (PA and GA) - both had southern ties S2 - Ruben (AL) beat Clay (NC) - BOTH SOUTHERN S3 - Fantasia (NC) beat Diana (GA) - BOTH SOUTHERN S4 - Carrie (OK) beat Bo (AL) - Midwest beat southern S5 - Taylor (AL) beat Katherine (CA) - Southern beats western S6 - Jordin (AZ) beat Blake (WA) - Western beats western S7 - David (MO) beat David (UT) - Midwest beats western S8 - Kris (AR) beat Adam (CA) - Southern beats western The southerners beat people from other geographic regions twice - both against contestants from CA, and lost to a contestant from another geographic region once. The other 3 southerner wins were against other southerners. |

Southerners in the finale have won 5 times, lost once, but 3 of those 5 times BOTH contestants were from the South.
AND OKLAHOMA IS NOT A SOUTHERN STATE!!!! It is a midwestern plains state. Real southerners do not consider OK a part of the South. |

I haven't seen every season (or even all of this one) but it sure seemed like Idol really started catering to rednecks, biblethumpers and faux patriots a
couple of seasons in. That's when I started losing interest in the show. (Or maybe it was always that way and I just got sick of it?)
I do think that Kelly, Ruben and Fantasia deserved to win. Carrie is when it really went downhill.... |

I think we're going for the wrong breakdown. The difference maker is "Red state" v. "Blue state." Every winner has hailed from a
state that voted for the republican in the last presidential election. It just so happens that all of the Southern states (pre-2008 election, at least) were
red states.

Ugh...I had forgotten how much they loved Josh...even though he couldn't sing! That was bad.
And I also have to say that NC did not vote red last election...it went blue!!! I know, I know, it has gone red most times before, but being a blue in a red state, I was very excited!!! But yes, that actually is a MUCH better distinction than just saying the winners are Southern. But not all winners were rednecks...some were just plain poor white/black trash too!

A lot of people from the south have lost too and I can't even think of many people from other parts of the US that were robbed because of geographic
voting.
Tamyra, Clay, Diana, Daughtry, and Melinda were all from the south too. Who has been from NY? Constantine? lol |

Oklahoma is odd in that it borders midwestern states (Kansas, Missouri), a southwestern state (New Mexico), a western state (Colorado) and southern states (Texas, Arkansas). Edit: Tamyra comes from Takoma Park, Maryland. Not southern per se.
