Anyone see this? It's one screenwriter's take on why the Glee pilot was poorly written. I found it interesting, especially because so many people here
liked it (though the ratings drop does tell a dif story). For what it's worth, I LOVED the pilot, watched it twice already, but a lot of his points
resonated with me (esp because I know the various rules of writing for teens). Anyway, it's an interesting read....

I love how the guy said he wanted to see the auditions of the kids that were bad. Um . . . I thought the point was that the glee club was in such disarray
that no one joined it. There weren't extra names on the sign-up sheet, and some of the members seemed a little embarrassed to be signing up. I don't
think people would've been rejected. The teacher, while wanting to relive his glory, didn't seem like the type of person that would tell people they
weren't good enough to join, especially since the group sucked, even with good singers.

I liked that the pilot was different from the norm. Not everything has to be Pilot 101.

The point that resonated with me the most is that we didn't really see the teens on Glee interacting with one another (as well as his point about the
unanswered question coming too late). Specifically though, I do find it interesting about the target audience. If the show is for teens, then the teen should
be the protagonists. It's the cardinal rule of YA writing (but of course, this is TV, wider audience). That's why I found it interesting. It didn't
bother me while watching, but on shows like Gossip Girl, I tend to ignore the parent storylines while here I felt invested about the teacher's. (And I am
not a teen for the record, I just tend to like teen stories a lot more than ones that feature adults.)

This isn't a teen show any more than Popular was really a show for teens. They're ballsy satires with a sassy, even sorta queeny flair. Teen writing
rules don't apply.

I'm kind of fascinated by that guy now. He failed as a screenwriter here. Moved to Canada and has worked on a bunch of crap. And he writes books on how to be successful in the screenwriting business.

I've been following his blog for a while because it was one of the only screenwriting blogs specifically devoted to TV out there about a year and a half ago (I was commissioned to write a TV pilot and needed some help since I'd never written a screenplay before--I work in the TV industry so that's how I got involved in this). Even though the screenplay thing never worked out, I still read his blog and a few other TV screenwriter blogs. I do get stuff out of his blog and others that translates into novel writing. I know the show isn't exactly targeted at teens. That's why this comment was so interesting to me. Because I'm not used to the crossover audience potential. In novel writing, it's one or the other and very few books crossover. Prep did. Harry Potter did. Twilight did. Not many others. So I'm used to the cardinal rule of--if your audience is a teen, your protagonist is a teen, and the adult storylines are either non-existent or relegated to the background (there's a reason there are so many orphans in fiction). |

Some of his critisims are fair, and some of them are addressed by the extended pilot.
However, I am an official Gleek fantard and it is my duty to bash the man. (His blog really is fairly interesting. Although half a page down he seems to praise Dawson's creek for reasons he criticized Glee, including its lack of teen realism. And his problem with the white kids getting all of the story? A) Dawson's Creek had a 100% caucasian cast and B) is Lea Michele white? I thought she was Indian for some reason.)

Glee is a show that really steps out of the box and gives us something different. This means that it is destined for cancellation to be replaced by reruns of
Till Death. I love this show, and that means it is doomed. I hope Glee outlasts my previous jinx victims- Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Dead Like Me, and My
So-Called Life.

New pics! Well, more like a few shots from the LA premiere and the upfronts,
BUT there are more photos of the six new members there and there are pictures from a rehearsal that are spoilery.
They're all from the cameraphone of one of the Executive Producers.
My favorite is this picture, though. |

I was going to say...she looks very Jewish to me. Also, the name Lea gives it away too. Hmmm...I wonder how old she is. Okay, I just looked it up. Yeah, she
would have been a freshman when my friends from Tenafly were...in college. Doh.
Lea was also in the play my aunt and uncle produced. Spring Awakening. That's why I initially watched this show. |

the chopped up pilot we saw air is clearly inferior to the actual pilot (which i sincerely hope is the version we see kick the whole season off come Fall
especially if Fox keeps referring to what we saw as a "preview"). That Alex Epstein dude gave valid points but only because the pilot he saw was the
chopped up version and is hardly indicative of the actual quality of the complete version. (everything he said is addressed and expanded upon in the real
pilot) otherwise, the solutions he gave made it sound like he wanted a scripted "American Idol" (which actually would work as a great show on its
own, I'm gonna go on a tangent real quick and say that people should be looking into reality shows as great jumping off points for great scripted series, I
mean, look at Lost, which was originally commissioned as a scripted Survivor)
anyway, all this buzz surrounding upcoming guest stars and future songs is definitely helping keep the show's profile up. Glee is gonna be huge. This is the best way to do a musical and not look tacky at all and the wit and tone of the writing fits perfectly with the concept. Finalyl something to really look forward to in the fall. |

I held a screening tonight for 4 Glee virgins. (And by held a screening I meant had them over for barbecue and refused to let them leave until they watched
it). They loved it.
