Sure, a black sidekick would bring in a whole demographic. I forgot the name of Leno's sidekick already, but he was an idiot. But he was a non-threatening idiot who brought in the black viewers. Who remembers the first black musician sidekick of Leno's? I remember when he got pissed at Leno for a joke and told him to "got to hell!" And he was serious. Didn't last long after that.
But some black sidekick too cowtowish would be called an Uncle Tom. And all the black comedians these days are usually in-your-face and get by with dick jokes. So a black guy has to have edge, but be non-threatening, clean, and audience likeable.
George Wallace comes to mind. He'd be a great late-night sidekick, but he's probably making too much money in Vegas these days. (Late show at the Flamingo).
