The thing that bothers me most about roadside memorials is that the families think they're entitled to put up their tacky shit there, even if it's on
someone else's property.
A guy in my town committed suicide - had a fight with his wife, ran off onto some neighbor's farmland, blew his brains out. The family put up a shrine to this guy on the farmer's property! After a month, the farmer took it down. They put it back up. The farmer put up no trespassing signs and took the shit away again. They put it back up. When the farmer sent them a letter telling them to remove the stuff once and for all and if they didn't do it and kept trespassing, he'd have to take legal action, the family had his letter published in the local rag newspaper. Everyone in town went after the farmer, they made his life miserable because HE was the bad guy. You want a shrine, buy a mausoleum at the cemetary and put your tacky shit there. Don't inflict your pain and bad taste on others. |

If that was me, I'd offer to plant a nice flower bush there if they'd stop. Or if it's an animally kind of farm, maybe a cow or something.

Near where I live they used to have entire friggin' cars and motorcycles painted white and put up on poles along a particularly deadly stretch of two-way
highway... to pressure the state legislature to fund the project to make it a safer divided highway. It worked, it's been divided for prolly 25 years
now...
Driving past the ghostly cars at night always freaked me out as a kid. |

I was wondering about rubbernecking the other day. Why DO people stare out their windows at crashes? What do they hope to see, exactly? I can understand
slowing down a bit for the safety of emergency workers, but why the staring?

Hmm, I don't think so. A horror movie is frightening in a 'safe' way. It is not at all equivalent to seeing a real, mangled human being.

I think roadside memorials are selfish -- people are so consumed with themselves these days that they presume to co-opt the public roadways for their own
personal use.
And the suicide guy's family who put the memorial up on the neighbor's land are even worse. Death happens. Get over it. |

Maybe we should have a photo challenge to see who can capture the cheesiest one. Of course, we would have to follow Safety First rules and pull over to
carefully the document the shrines, and that just seems like too much work.

interestingly enough, if you google image search for roadside memorials, you find that the habit is also common in the the UK, Poland, Australia, Mexico and
quite a few other countries

I live near a particularly bad stretch of highway that is dotted with the little shrine/memorials. Someone dies on this highway every month because of the
curves, the speed, and the fact that nothing separates the lanes except paint. Some of the memorials are simple...a cross, a picture, some tattered flowers,
but some of them are elaborate structures obviously put up by Hispanic folks deep into religious imagery. Now, I am noticing them on street signs, etc. I
figure if it helps someone cope, what the heck. Sad, tho.

I just watched an episode of CSI NY where they paint bikes
white and put them around NYC as a memorial to people killed on their bikes. Has anyone in New York seen one of these?
