Survivor: Marquesas was the fourth season of the United States reality show Survivor. Hosted by Jeff Probst, it aired from February 28 - May 19, 2002 on CBS. Thirteen episodes aired, plus a mid-season recap and live interview with Rosie O'Donnell after the finale. The winner, Vecepia Towery, was revealed on May 19, 2002, where she defeated Neleh Dennis by a vote of 4-3.

The contestants were divided into two tribes: Maraamu and Rotu (Marquesan for 'Southern Wind' and 'Rain' respectively). They later merged into the Soliantu tribe (a word created by competitors Kathy-Vavrick O'Brien and Rob "Boston Rob" Mariano which they intended to mean "Sacred Allegiance to the Sun.")

1. Maraamu. This is the first time a tribe's been crushed so hard. Pre-swap, Rotu won the first five challenges, and Maraamu lost three members. Then the swap came, and Maraamu actually won a challenge. Rotu also won two, and despite the swap it still resulted in two Maraamu leaving Maraamu and a Rotu leaving Rotu, resulting in a 7-3 Rotu majority at the merge. How could Rotu fuck this up? Hey, kinda reminds me of Tocantins a bit, but anyway.
2. Kathy pees on John. So John gets stung by a jellyfish or whatever, and as a doctor knew that urine would sterilize the wound, so he asked some of his tribemates to pee on his wound. Paschal and one of the other guys tried, but got performance anxiety and backed out. Luckily, Kathy came to the rescue and proceeded to piss on John, creating an iconic Survivor moment. She then continued peeing on him, because when you gotta go, you gotta go.
3. Rob. Rob was a pretty big character in the first half of Marquesas. He tried forming a showmance with Sarah, called Peter a "fruit loop," and fought with Hunter over leadership before he and his group took Hunter out. The swap happened, and he ended up stuck on Rotu with Vecepia and Sean. Despite that, he still managed to make the merge and even tried to form an alliance with Kathy when the two were alone together to organize the merge or whatever, which may be why Kathy was in love with Rob during All-Stars. The merge happens, and since obvious target Kathy won immunity, Rob ended up getting booted. Despite only making the F10, Rob was such a big character that he still made All-Stars, found true love, and became the perennial loser we all know and love/hate.
   
4. The Rotu 4. A bit into the game, John decided to form an alliance with Tammy, Zoe, and Robert to form the Rotu 4, a powerful alliance that would dominate the game until the end. This turned John into an arrogant douchebag, and he went on a sort of power trip. After the merge and they booted Rob, there was the iconic challenge where you chopped coconuts to eliminate players. The Rotu 4 wisely decided to tell the other five members where they stood by eliminating Kathy, then Sean and Vecepia, and then Paschal and Neleh. Truly a brilliant tribe that knew how to hold their secrets close, and that's why they made it to the end. Oh, wait.
5. The game-changer. This vote was pretty big. This was probably the biggest game-changer in Survivor history that far, with its only competition being Jeff Varner's boot in Australia and the post-merge alliances in Africa trying to out-suck each other. There was a strong alliance of four, and five outcasts. So the five outcasts banded together and voted out Rotu 4 leader John. Now, this vote wasn't perfect because from what I hear (and correct me if I'm wrong), John knew he was going so it wasn't a blindside, and Zoe actually voted against John as well, but it was still a huge satisfying vote that led to the pagoning of the arrogant Rotu 4. But the best part? John crying like a little bitch when he got voted out. You see few people, if any, cry when they get taken out like that, but god damn if it wasn't an awesome sight to watch.
6. Biracial Homo Moment. Of all the odd pairings, a white judge and a black... I don't remember what Sean did, but Paschal and Sean were a pretty unlikely duo, even though they ended up in the same alliance. They were teamed together for a reward challenge, and they ended up winning, causing the two to hug each other and roll around in the sand while embracing each other. They then went on a date and probably had anal sex. Hard to believe it took over 30 write-ups for me to finally mention anal sex.
   
7. The Purple Rock. After the trivia show-down ties in Africa, the producers came up with the purple rock as the new tiebreaker. The idea behind the purple rock was that if there was a tie, then the person who had immunity and the two that were being targeted would become immune (though Wikipedia makes it sound like the two people without votes wouldn't be immune, so feel free to clarify on this), and the other voters would pick a rock out of a bag. The person who got the purple rock went home. It was a stupid fucking idea, and this was amplified when they reached the F4 and Vecepia/Kathy and Paschal/Neleh stayed loyal to each other, resulting in a tie. Kathy and Neleh got votes, and Vecepia was immune, but since the alternative meant Paschal would be guaranteed to go, they still did the rock with the three non-immune people. Of course Paschal of all people gets the purple rock and goes, leaving him as the only person to ever get voted out (no quitting or winning) without ever getting any votes. Yes, Paschal could've saved his ass by going against his very loyal ally and voting her out, but that doesn't make the concept of the Purple Rock any less idiotic. We didn't see a tie again for another six seasons until Palau, where we finally got the far-superior fire-making tiebreaker challenge. Fuck the Purple Rock. Fuck it dead.
8. Kathy. One of the most interesting underdog stories in Survivor history. She started off as the annoying older woman that was an easy first boot for her tribe. The problem was, Rotu kept winning immunity, so she never left. The swap comes, and Kathy, Neleh, and Paschal end up on Maraamu with Sarah amd Gina. Sarah was an easy boot, and Neleh and Paschal had a tough choice between Kathy and Gina before they decided to save their former Rotu member. The merge happens, and Kathy's an easy target to go, so she manages to pull off an immunity win to save herself. Then the overthrow of the Rotu 4 happens, she takes out Sean with Paschal/Neleh, then joins up with Vecepia at F4 to take out Neleh, only for Paschal to go. So she makes it to the F3 with Neleh and Vecepia, and it's one of those endurance immunities. At one point, Neleh tells Kathy her boobs were about to pop out, and when Kathy tries to adjust, she accidentally does something that eliminates her. After that, Neleh and Vecepia decided to go to the F2, and that is where the story of Kathy the underdog ends. From the jury comments, it sounds like she could've won the entire thing had she lasted one more TC, but she still had an amazing underdog story for getting so far despite constantly being the easy boot. Too bad she kinda fucked this storyline up by being such a bitter piece of shit on All-Stars.
9. Neleh. The sweet Mormon girl whose name is "Helen" spelled backwards. She buddied up with Paschal quickly, and they soon became this season's Rodger/Elizabeth. They got swapped to Maraamu, where they stuck with Kathy and voted the two Maraamu members out. Then came the merge, and they stuck with Rotu initially by voting out Rob, but after the pecking order was revealed, they turned on the Rotu 4. Then the F5 came, and they got Kathy to join them and vote out Sean. Then Neleh tied with Kathy, Paschal went, and I'm just now realizing that the only noteable things Neleh actually did was offer her tribemates a mint that was in her mouth after a reward challenge, tell Kathy her boobs were hanging out, and say she didn't care about winning the million dollars, so who cares.
10. Vecepia. Underrated. Yeah, she flew under the radar, but she also sucked up to the Rotu 4 and not only did that give her a chance to stick around for awhile and maybe even integrate herself into the mix, it got her three out of four of their votes, which with alliance-mate Sean's vote netted her the win. She was also smart enough to write qualities about every Survivor in her diary, which gave her an edge when that immunity challenge occurred in the F4. She struck a deal with Neleh to go to the F2 after Kathy went out at F3, and they made it, and Vecepia won 4-3. People give her shit about being boring and not playing the game, but I think she actually played a better game than, say, Sandra, who played the same UTR strategy but simply used the words "As long as it's not me." Vecepia was strategizing and scheming, it's just she didn't need to do it as much or as overtly. She was still a deserving winner overall.
