Get into Studio Ghibli's movies. Their animation is beautiful, poignant and a hell of a lot more imaginative than most animated movies.

Oh boy.....
I love animated movies, especially the Disney/Pixar ones. They're just all around fun to watch. |

The Pixar ones are different than many "Family" films. For me, though, by far the best of the last several years was Ratatouille.

cg, I loved Ratatouille and i'm not a big fan of animated films, but I thought it was awesome.

The fanboy stuff like TDK and Oscar Bait movies like Doubt will fill the extra nominees. Pixar also has really branded themselves well enough that even if they don't make something good as Wall E or Ratatouille you can pencil them in for 1 of the 10 slots every year. |

Speaking of Studio Ghibli, Ponyo will be coming out in a few months.
Out of what I've seen the only one that struck me as similar was Up (to Howl's Moving Castle). Old fogie traveling the world in a seemingly magical house with colorful sidekicks. However, the director Peter Docter was the dialogue director on Howl and has acknowledged being a fan of Miyazaki, so no big deal. |

Waltz with Bashir and In Bruges and RocknRolla would have made my list for sure.

This was totally a reaction to the Dark Knight fanboys.
But mostly it's about marketing. Twice as many movies with "Best Picture Nominee" stamped across the DVD cover (and more people watching the Academy Awards). |

Everyone hates the Golden Globes because they always have shit nominated in the Musical/Comedy categories. So get ready to see some of that crap like Mamma Mia! at the Oscars. The "comedies are so underrated at the Oscars" argument is bullshit considering each year we get maybe one or two decent comedies.Die! Mama Mia was pretty awesome. IMO, the last Pixar film worth giving any recognition too was "Finding Nemo," which actually had a storyline and life lesson to it. And them uping the nominees to ten just really fucks up the whole voting. "Nine" and "Shutter Island" were clear front runners, but now their lead is slowly going to go away. I won't complain if this helps "Creation" out though. I can't wait for Jennifer Connelley to get her 2nd oscar. |

Bjorkrazy wrote:But even Pixar says they base a lot of their work on classic storylines/themes. They are pretending that they aren't influenced by other work. Plus it isn't like Studio Ghibli doesn't get recognition and dislikes Pixar, in fact I'm pretty sure John Lasseter and Miyazaki are friends. Granted I haven't seen a ton of Studio Ghibli films only Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service but those four don't really have any similar ideas/themes that I remember unless you are thinking of flying castle and flying houses. I am a big/huge Pixar fan but even I don't think that Up and WALL-E deserve Oscar nominations for best picture. I really think WALL-E lost a lot of its luster after the first 30 minutes and I thought Up was great but definitely not Best Picture of the year worthy...not even a nominee. That being said I think that ten nominees is a horrible idea, it makes it way to easy for a crappy film to get nominated for best picture.

Ratatouille was great because it was textured. Many people I know and lots of Hollywood people said they did not like it because it was "About a rat
in a kitchen, how disgusting!" Please! Cindrella had mice making her fucking clothes and Snow White had dirty woodland animals cleaning her house.
It's fantasy. Sheesh. The film itself had so many nice little elements, had a more adult feel than most Pixar stuff, and dared to have characters that
were multi-dimensional.
I think having more nominess will make the Oscars relevant again. While the fanboys and girls sucked re: dark Knight and Wall-E, they had a point. The Oscars have always been a bit elitist, and have alienated a lot of the viewing auddience. While this move will never mean that Transformers 30 will be up for the award, it DOES allow for some crowd pleasers to be safely ensconced amongst the snobbier fare. |

pushingjate wrote:I don't care if you sang "Dancing Queen" for 4 days after seeing Mamma Mia! It should not be nominated for an Oscar, nor should films like it. Fuck "Shutter Island" as well.....My husband had never read the book (I had, and was really hoping Scorsese would do something different with it or make it not so obvious where the story was going), and he figured out the entire story line from the trailer. And I am already over "Nine". (Although "Be Italian" is a great song). This is "Chicago" with Daniel Day-Lewis. Have you seen the trailer?? I half expected Richard Gere to show up dancing in there somewhere....It was the EXACT same look as "Chicago" had. While that film was welcome at the exact right time, Rob Marshall cannot expect to do the same shit over and over again and be rewarded for it. I can only hope (and know that it will never happen) that they will actually nominate worthy films. Smaller films like "Precious" and "The Hurt Locker" (although I am not sure that is eligible if it was released in NYC last year) make it into the Top Ten, but I predict now that "Star Trek" will be a Best Picture nomination next year...... |

Star Trek will probably be nominated. UP will be nominated. James Cameron's Avatar will likely be nominated.
That should be enough to satisfy the masses. |

To think just a few years ago if the words Star Trek and Oscar were in the same sentence it was a part of a joke.

I love musicals, and Mamma Mia! was terrible. Most of the singing was shit and the acting was nothing special.
Star Trek was fucking awesome, and I would love it if it were up for an Oscar. |

I couldn't agree more...MAMMA MIA was the suckiest of the suckiest. Except for Amanda Seyfried, I hated it soooooo much. Meryl Streep was bad but Pierce
Bronsan singing should disqualify the shit from being burned to a DVD. Dogs howled.

I refused to see it, though many of my female friends were CERTAIN I would love it because I am gay. Puh-lease. Odd fact about me: I like Broadway dancing
style, love a lot of songs from musicals, but generally HATE musicals themselves. The parts work, but as a whole they annoy me.
The best thing about this move is that it gets people talking about the OScars, and about possibilities. Good, that. Great article in the LA Times today about why it is a good thing. |
