I have so many crystal clear memories of growing up (sort of like snap shots of the times), and they have MJ songs playing in the background. From roller
skating at an old style roller disco to Off The Wall, and later on parties with Thriller playing, Bad on the radio at work in my early 20s. Also the pictures
they're showing on TV I remember seeing them on the front pages of the tabloids while standing in checkout lines at the supermarket when out grocery
shopping with my mom when I was young. Same thing for the video clips - I can vividly remember making popcorn and getting ready for the premiere of the
Thriller video on Halloween after I got home from school, being BLOWN AWAY seeing him moonwalk and the video of MJ getting all the Grammy awards in 1984. I
recall the exact conversations of sitting around in a friend's basement and smoking late, late at night and watching music videos. Whatever the allegations
that followed, he was there for lots of very good times memories all through my youth.

Lots of revisionist history. In the 80s, Michael was far beyond a famous black star. He was a worldwide superstar phenomenon. The first black entertainer to
become that big and cross over to all cultures. It went Sinatra/Elvis/The Beatles/Michael Jackson.
He was also the first pop singer to mix equal parts singing and dancing. Sure, Elvis shook his hips and rocked back and forth singing Clambake, but no one did it at the level he did since the days of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. He also was the pioneer of the high quality music video. He pushed the envelope and forced others to do so. Sure he became a total freak, but that doesn't take away what he did in the Off the Wall/Thriller/Bad days. |
