Second...no mj was NOT the first black artist on MTV as so many morons stated. No the thriller video did not come out in 82. And NO MJ WAS NOT A PIONEER IN RACE RELATIONS. No one said the Thriller video came out in 82. The Thriller video came in late 83, I think. Anyway, the Thriller album came out in November of 82 and Billie Jean was the first video single. It's the one that MTV refused to play because they said it didn't fit their rock format. It's more a matter of MJ forcing MTV to incorporate R&B music than anything to do w/ race. White kids were already buying Jackson's records even before MTV came along. It's not comparable to white kids of the 50s all of sudden buying Ray Charles and Little Richard records for the first time. I think the racial element of this non-argument is covered quite well in the SSerena chapter of the MJ RIP thread. |

Well, it got much much worse after that. Or funnier, depending on your mood.

I have to work then - I really haven't seen a music video in years and I used to leave it on that channel a lot for background music

MTV's minimal music video programming is just as pathetic as their non-music shows.
This whole thing about MTV refusing to play Michael Jackson's shit because it wasn't rock 'n roll is funny. What the fuck was so "rock 'n roll" about "Video Killed the Radio Star"? |

He always reminded me of Frankenstein a bit. Like if he had big bolts sticking out of his neck when I saw him at the gym I wouldn't have even done a double
take.

Like I said before, the first year or so they played Lena lovich, clash, pretenders, squeeze, plasmatics, and tons of new wave/alternative music. Some of those
artsts went mainstream later. But at the time, they were not.
