Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 vs. 4.0 |

Long story short, 4.0 sucks ass. There I said it.

Every Sunday in Washington, D.C., a group of gay men in their thirties meet to play the wildly popular fantasy role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. They refer to themselves jokingly as "the hottest gay gamers in Washington, D.C." In the game, invented in 1974 by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson (who died in April) players assume character identities and interact with each other, discussing their actions and interactions with other characters. The players create a story, and achieve experience points which make them more powerful. D&D (as it's popularly abbreviated) and the people who play it are routinely made the butt of jokes in high school and popular media. I talked with the group during one of their weekly sessions. BUTT: Can you tell me how and when the group began?
So you guys were all into D&D as kids?
What do you think drew you to D&D?
Is that common? I hear that a lot - that there's some kind of a connection between gays and SF?
So what's the story that's taking place in the game you're playing now? Where are you at? What's the quest?
What are your characters in this game?
Now do you guys have gay characters in the game?
Do any of your characters in the game have gay sex?
Where do you meet up and play? Do you always go to one of your houses or do you swap around?
What's the vibe like during your sessions? Do you listen to music while you play? Is it kinda like a guys poker night with beer and
pizza?
I read on your blog, Jim, that while you're all out as gay, not all of you are out as D&D gamers?
Have there been any group romances or hook-ups?
But Brian, you said before you met your first boyfriend through D&D?
How did he do that?
But how did you pass all these notes across the table and pull your dicks out without anybody noticing?
You know since there's this common stereotype, or rather, people like to make fun of geeks for being into D&D, but do you guys feel
somehow like by keeping it going that you're doing something a little bit outside the gay norm?

4.0 is a majorly dumbed down version of the original, designed to make the WoW players happy. All of the classes are carbon copies- the just have different
abilities like "magic missile" and "cleave" that basically do the same thing- so there's no real different feel for playing a wizard.
PLUS, you can no longer be chaotic neutral. Plus, I hate the fact that those of us who spent 25 years playing a game were basically expected to start over with
a totally new system.
3.0 was an improvement on 2.0. 3.5 was an improvement on 3.0. 4.0 is just a different, shittier game. |

Lawful Neutral seems very accountantlike. I bet lawful neutral people spend a lot of time in meetings.

I bet 90% of the Evil peeps are kiddiots.

This one chick in my gaming group keeps trying to play a lawful evil monk. She's an engineer, not a kiddiot.

designed to make the WoW players happy. Is that even possible? I played D & D for years and finally got my Ring Of Shooting Stars and then we never played again. My DM was incredibly evil about it. |

Um,
I still play 2.0. Really. I have a players handbook signed by Gary Gygax at Gencon in 1979. I don;t care what OT thinks of me. |
