It really made me miss Jen Johnson.
Now whether or not you loved or loathed Jen, Jen was quirky, Jen was unusual, Jen was entertaining, and Jen could play Big Brother.
Jen was not the only person, though. There's usually almost always people like her. You may love them. You may detest them. But they are people that are entertaining, quirky, and seem to really have potential as "characters" down the road. People just off the top of my head that are like this were Dick (despite being, I think, the single worst person ever to be cast), Libra, Keesha, Dan, Chelsea, Amber, Ivette, Janelle, April, Howie, James, Diane, Nakomis, Holly, Natalie (BB9 - sorry, she was loathed, but so massively entertaining)... That's just off the top of my head. Now to my point about this season.
I feel like there's no one like any of those people here. As in, people that can drive a season.
I feel like the *closest* person is Casey, someone who clearly has potential down the road to $!#+$ (m.0rph) into a real season-driving character.
I understand, I *understand* it's only been a few days.
But let's look at who's here.
Jesse - The thing about Jesse is most of all, we've seen it all before. What's worse, and a testament to my complaint about this cast, is that virtually no one cares. This guy is just about exactly as arrogant, pinheaded, and egotistical as last year, but there's no Libra to call him on it. Everyone just lets him run around. They don't even bitch about it in private. So Jesse just feels like been there, done that. What's worse is we saw him only a year ago and he was such a boring character type. Jesse isn't going to get any more interesting or likeable or anything at all, and it's an unfortunate thing to realize, especially when the rest of the cast is so weak and we may have to put up with Recyclesse for weeks on end.
Jordan - Nice and ditzy, but she's SO dumb that I can't get excited about her. She's not like Keesha, Janelle, or even Daniele where they might be textbook dumb but have street smarts and a real ability to play a *consciously* strong social game. Has she been instinctively right about some things? Yes. But there's so beyond nothing going on up there (her confessionals this episode shocked me at just how utterly vapid she sounded) that how can you really root for her and trust her to really be a force this season, instead of what she's been so far: a slightly charming dead weight.
Chima - Has some potential, but despite being the traditional fun black chick, she just seems so...bland. People loved or hated Libra last year, but THAT ladies and gentleman was a STRONG CHARACTER. Chima hasn't really been anything: charming, strategic, interesting, she's just been totally meh with a little whiney thrown in. I feel like Chima is one of those people that will be entertaining based on what situations she's thrown into in the house, but she's never going to single handily be entertaining like so many of the people I listed above. And that's my whole point. None of these people are the latter.
Michele - I like her, yes, and there's some potential sure just because she's not a nutcase like everyone else on this show and it might take a few weeks for her to crack open. But you know why I like her? She's cute, and she hasn't done anything wrong. She's my current favorite because of that. And that, frankly, is depressing. I can't imagine Michele being some driving force of the season -- someone we'll remember as being a noteworthy character past this year. I hope she proves me wrong, but one of the reasons I posted this is I realized that she was my favorite for virtually no reason at all, because this cast sucks. She's cute and somewhat charming in the most general of senses.
Braden - Come on guys. He has some of the qualities we like in contestants -- quirky, occasionally charming. But what a fucking dud. And this guy is a famous poster on this forum for crying out loud, he should be 10 times better than what he's been. Usually at the beginning people are a "type" and we have an opinion about them, and as the season goes on it all shifts and changes etc. etc. But this guy never got off the ground. I mean, how can anyone feel anything other than total ambivalence when it comes to this upcoming vote between he and Chima? It feels like the only motivator of any sort of feeling around here is that Brady is a Suckster and Chima "represents" the jocks we all hate. People are latching on to his once in awhile charming aside moments because this cast so utterly lacks anything similar that we have to root for someone.
Russel - Another been there, done that. Now Ruscle has potential to actually be a driving force in the season: Someone that is entertaining AND can play. But Ruscle is such a typical character that I feel like there's nothing interesting about him. There's nothing charming about him. No one can find anything rootable about him.
Laura - The definition of bland. Her tits seriously ARE the most interesting thing about her. She could be an okay player, sure, but seriously, what the fuck personality? Does anyone expect LAURA to have a meltdown? LAURA to scream at someone? I mean really. She's wallpaper.
Kevin - Another totally bland person who hasn't exhibited one iota of personality since the feeds went on.
Now three people DO have real potential as characters. They provide entertainment (if you want to call it that), and can certainly at least play the game. The problem? They are utterly loathsome.
Ronnie, Lydia, Natalie.
For the sake off my enjoyment of the show I'm still holding off on hating Lydia and Natalie, but what the fuck good is it having three definite "characters" if there's almost nothing to root for in them?
That's my problem with this season. Everyone is either loathsome or a total dud. I think of how hard I rooted for Ivette, or against Janelle (and everyone else remembers vice versa), or watching the Coven fight, or all the infamous Jenisms and Amber being a nutcase, and not a single person in this cast evokes any sort of passion in me whatsoever.
