With each new trend, everyone jumps on the bandwagon and declares it the best thing ever and all civilization has been leading up to it, and you're either there or you're square. Then the next thing comes along and the previous thing falls by the wayside, used only by spammers and sexual predators. - Email - Message boards - Geocities - Instant Messenger - Blogging - Texting - Skype - Myspace - Facebook - Twitter By next year we can bump this thread, laugh about that old dinosaur Facebook, and ask who still uses twitter now that FutureThing is here. And the year after that we'll do it again. I predict the next thing will involve some kind of virtual potato chip. Potato chips are yummy.

Way before we "mind surf" (as I suggested in TC's invention thread a few months ago), which would require some medium that opens the bandwidth to brainwaves, I think all those computer-based operations will be replaced by something called "Scribble". Scribble would allow you to create content linked to any site/page/profile/post/URL/etc. With Scribble, you get your own home page you, and everyone else, can Scribble on. You can comment on on-line videos, pics, and, of course, scribbles (creating an on-the-spot threaded message board). Scribble subscriptions (called "Subscribbling") can similarly be user-based, page-based, post-based, URL-based, Scribble-based, etc. I imagine Google's already got this, however.

You can Scribble audio content, and Subscribble with a cell phone to a particular phone number at a particular time, essentially creating a VOIP phone call. You can Subscribble to video streams, replacing your cable service. Create webmeetings on-the-spot, sharing documents, what-have-you, replacing Live Meeting. Scribble on a date, you've got a Calendar reminder. Scribble on your own computer's files, you've got categorical tags. It's an all-in-one, electronic-content management service. If Google does this, I hope it's not called Gooble.

It's fairly new and already starting to be mocked. I think most of the trends mentioned in the OP are driven by teenagers. Texting is just email for people who don't work in an office (eg, students) and Facebook/MySpace is an electronic forum for teenage angst. What better way to bring the anxiety of high school to everyone by counting up how many "friends" you have? As best I can tell, the only people who care about Facebook are teenagers and stay at home moms obsessively posting pictures of their kids. Most of the more recent "innovations" for the internet (blogging, FB, twitter) seem to be outlets for self-absorption. I don't have any bold predictions for the future, though. I'm happy mocking other peoples' self-obsession.
