I guess you'd have to live the first 7 seasons while they were on TV to get it.
You really have to watch those assumptions. I watched Outback when it first aired and hated it. It was very much like when a really fantastic, high quality low-budget movie comes out and does unexpectedly well, and so then they make a sequel that's all high-budget and slick and overhyped and has tons of production value, but that has no soul whatsoever and therefore sucks donkey balls. I found the cast unpleasant, the scenery lackluster, the game-play stupid, and the editorial bias offensive. What saved the season for me, though, was all the survival stuff that solesurvivor123 hates so much. That was the only thing about Survivor 2 that I liked. (Well...that and the winner. I didn't care all that much for Tina personally, but I greatly admired her game and remember being both very surprised and very happy when she won over Colby.)
Fortunately, I loved Africa. If I hadn't, I almost certainly would have written the franchise off and just stopped watching.
Having said all that, though, I find that I no longer hate Outback nearly as much as I did when it first aired. It's grown on me a bit over time, although I still rank it pretty low.
The last time I posted on this thread was shortly after Micronesia. I think I'll wait until Samoa finishes before ranking again and finding out how my tastes have changed since then.
I'm glad someone else thinks like I do. :) It's not that I hated the Outback so much as I hated the sense of self importance that it had. Borneo was a lot more self referential and and self deprecating than the later seasons were. And I liked Africa more than the Outback as well.
