CALGARY - A reality TV contestant from Canada wanted by police after the death of his bikini model ex-wife was already facing domestic assault charges for allegedly striking her in April - four months before her naked body was found in a California dumpster.


The manhunt for Ryan Alexander Jenkins, 32, continued in Canada and the U.S. on Wednesday, as American authorities reported they had yet to hear from him.


Jenkins has been listed as a "person of interest" by officials with the Buena Park Police Department.

They said they believe he was the last person to see his former wife, 28-year-old Jasmine Fiore, alive.


The body of the petite, blond model was discovered in a suitcase left in a dumpster in Buena Park - about 30 kilometres southeast of Los Angeles - on Saturday by a person collecting recyclables. She had reportedly been strangled.

Police said there were no persons of interest in the case other than Jenkins, a former real-estate developer who moved to the U.S. earlier this year.


"He was the last person seen with the victim when she was still alive. He did report her missing subsequent to discovering (Fiore's body)," said Buena Park police Lt. Gary Worrall. "That's suspicious to us."


Jenkins' publicist reportedly told celebrity gossip website TMZ that Jenkins was speaking with his attorney and would be fully co-operating with police, adding he "is planning on meeting with them in the near future."

Worrall said no one has contacted them.


"We have not been contacted by Mr. Jenkins nor any of his agents regarding anything," he said.

"I would have expected by now that other entertainment people would have urged him to contact us."



According to Clark County Court documents, Jenkins was due in court on Dec. 18 for a misdemeanour charge stemming from an incident in Las Vegas in April.

At that time, Jenkins was arrested and charged with "battery constituting domestic violence" against Fiore, allegedly for striking her "in the arm with his fist," says the Orange County Register.

It is not the first time Jenkins has faced criminal charges for violence against women.

In January 2007, he was handed a conditional discharge and 15 months of probation for assaulting a woman in Calgary.

At the time, the judge ordered Jenkins to undergo psychological counselling for domestic violence and attend outpatient treatment for sex addiction, according to court documents.

Although initially charged with assault causing bodily harm in the July 2005 incident, Jenkins pleaded guilty to common assault in March 2006.

He was also ordered not to contact the victim - reportedly his girlfriend at the time - nor be at her home or place of employment.


Jenkins would not have a criminal record for this offence if he completed his probation without breaching the conditions ordered by the judge.


His lawyer at the time, Alain Hepner, described Jenkins as a warm, friendly and easygoing man who did as he was told.

"He followed my instructions, took my advice," Hepner said Wednesday.

His violent past and the current charges he faces appear to portray a different man than was being seen on the VH1's reality TV show, Megan Wants a Millionaire, where Jenkins was competing with other men for the affection of the show's star, Megan Hauserman.

Jenkins, nicknamed the "Smooth Operator," had listed his worth at $2.5 million and, in his bio, said he moulded "player girls" into "princesses."

On Wednesday, VH1 announced the show, which had completed production in March, has postponed any future airings.

"This is a tragic situation and our thoughts go out to the victim's family," said a statement from the network.

Celebrity websites said Jenkins had also participated in another reality show, I Love Money 3.

Jenkins met Fiore in Las Vegas in March and married her two days later.

Fiore's mother, Lisa Lepore, told media the marriage was annulled in May, but that Jenkins had convinced Fiore to take him back.

She told the L.A. Times her daughter was making changes to her life, including setting up a personal training business with a friend.

Fiore and Jenkins had gone down to San Diego for a poker tournament.

On Friday night, Fiore texted a former boyfriend, Robert Hasman, to say she would travel to Las Vegas to see him, according to TMZ.

The website also reported Jenkins was upset Hasman had been communicating with Fiore while Jenkins was shooting a reality television show in Mexico.

Fiore's body was discovered Saturday morning in Buena Park.

Jenkins reported her missing to the L.A. authorities on Saturday evening, said Buena Park's Worrall.

With the help of the Orange County Coroner's office and the Los Angeles Police Department, who were investigating Fiore as a missing person, police were able to identify her as the woman in the suitcase.

There is reason to believe Jenkins has fled to Canada, said Worrall.



He was last seen Thursday in San Diego, a city on the southern end of California. Fiore's body was found about 160 kilometres north of there in Buena Park.

The highway continues through Buena Park all the way up to Canada, Worrall said.


The department has been in touch with Canadian officials.

The Calgary Police Service is assisting American authorities in the hunt for Jenkins.


"The U.S. Marshal's office has been in contact with us based on the fact he has some connections in Calgary," police spokesman Kevin Brookwell said.

"Our fugitive apprehension details is working to check out his links, contacts and associations right now. We're doing what we need up here to cover all our bases."


The Americans have also alerted the Canada Border Services Agency.

Although an agency official said she couldn't comment specifically about Jenkins, she added the agency would take measures to flag its databases for any Canadians who have been identified as a potential threat to public safety.


"We'll establish a lookout so our officers have immediate access to any information they need," spokeswoman Lisa White said.


Canadians wanted by foreign authorities are first turned over the RCMP, White said.
