Actually, the following quote was posted Sunday on VelocityLiveRadio.com, in an audio interview with Adam Lambert from the American Idols Live tour's Long Island stop. Following a brief discussion about his forthcoming album, the interviewer asks Adam, "So the craziest thing that has happened to you so far since you've been out here has been?"

And here's Adam's response:

"There's a lot of very interesting fan encounters ... very, very overzealous fans, and I love them all. They're super supportive, and they obviously put me where I am. You know, if it weren't for these fans, I wouldn't have gotten as far as I did. Um, sometimes ... they're a little sweaty. A little smelly ... very touchy-feely. And some of the gifts are interesting. You know, I got like an inflatable kangaroo at one point, four feet tall, and I kind of was like, ok, well ... thank you, this is sweet, what the ... am I going to do with this?

I have two minds about this. On the one hand, as an interviewer, I always appreciate talking with someone who is honest and forthcoming and doesn't hide behind platitudes. There's nothing more frustrating than interviewing someone who clearly is determined not to share anything of substance. So part of me admires Adam's candor. I don't doubt for a second the accuracy of his description of some -- but, clearly, not all -- of his fans. Nor do I have any clue what someone on a tour bus with six other guys would do with a four-foot inflatable kanagaroo. Every celebrity has stories like this. Heck, I've got stories like this (for the record, none of them involve Idol Chatter readers).

However, I can't think of many artists I respect who would dream of making a comment like that in an on-the-record situation. It smacks of ungraciousness, and, worse, it suggests a disregard for the people who admire him.

Yes, I saw that Adam started with the boilerplate niceties about how he loves all his "super supportive" fans who got him where he is today. I'm not sure I buy that. That's too easy to say, and the other stuff is too easy not to say -- unless you've started to believe your own hype and started to forget, or simply not considered, that when people have paid $70 a ticket, have waited in a crowd, in the summer sun all day, and don't have access to backstage shower facilities, well, their sweat just might stink.

Everybody slips up and says thoughtless stuff, especially newly famous people that are just learning the etiquette of celebrity. But this one's pretty basic, and I can't help but wonder if it's not also pretty telling about Adam's personality. The guy's getting sex toys thrown at him on stage, and he thinks the craziest thing that has happened to him is that he has sweaty, smelly fans? Pop-culture snark has its place, but so does common courtesy.

Or, to put it another way: How would you feel right now if you had given Adam Lambert an inflatable kangaroo?
