You know what's funny, my brother is in the can as we speak after taking a bunch of senna pills for a colonoscopy. He didn't have to do the "magic
jug" [as I call it, since I work in a pharmacy and see several go across the counter weekly] but had to take 36 senna tabs, 18 at a time. Yay.

Dave Barry (yeah, I know) wrote a column on his very first colonoscopy and the prep he did for it. It tickles me to no end for some reason.
Here's the part that makes me giggle (mostly because I can remember my mom going through something very similar for her first colonoscopy).

I had one a few months ago. I was given Pico Salex for my prep. It was 2 small packets you mix with 250 ml of water so not alot to drink. I had to drink the
first package at 7 pm and the second at 7 am. The first one kicked in a couple hours later. It was much easier on my system than the Kleen Prep I had taken
before for my previous tests. I was in the bathroom for most of the night though. I ended up taking the second package at 5 am because I thought if I took it
later I would still be needing the washroom on my way to the hospital. The test itself was fine, I didn't feel a thing.
And the caffeine water is a good idea. I also had a wicked headache from no coffee that morning. Good luck. To your friend I mean... |

Check with your doc about the caffeinated water first, dmb. It may have other effects that can mess with your colonoscopy...though in truth it doesn't
seem likely.
I've never taken the pills; they've gotta be better than the awful go-lightly though. Ugh, that stuff is beyond vile. I had to deal with the shits and bombit*. *My kid's name for vomit |

I keep wimping out right before the test. The liquid only prior day is somewhat problematic for a diabetic.
Anywhooo, I am going to give this another valient try later this fall. I have a question for those who manage to get through this. When they do the exam, are you on your side? Or do they place you flat out on your stomach, ass straight up toward the ceiling? Just curious because I have a weak knee on one side so I can't lay on that side very long without a lot of knee pain. (yeah, I know you are asleep during the test, but the knee will still hurt a lot after that wears off). |

On your side. I think they used to do it ass up, at least I recall my mother describing the humiliation.

The admins are going to have to change dmb's subnic to "dribbling asshole".

I drank a can of diet mt dew the morning of my colonoscopy with no ill effects. It's a clear liquid, so who cares? I need my caffeine.

I have no problem with stuff up my bum, but I hate needles and IVs scare the CRAP out of me, so I couldn't do it.

so you can have some water in the morning? you don't have to totally dehydrate yourself?
i HATE iv's, but only when the person inserting it is inexperienced. i know that they're inexperienced when they keep looking up at your face like "whoa, you didn't feel that?" |

Beware of any type of pills. You can have "flashbacks" for years to come.

I hate it when they're putting an IV in and they say, "Boy, you have really small veins. Hope I can hit one."

Stupid fucking Yuku. |

I did the gallon jug -- supposedly it had a flavor but all I recall was that it was gross and the consistency of really badly made egg drop soup at bad Chinese
restaurants.
Since I have had too many procedures to count, I have found the easiest way around the no coffee rule is to pop two or three caffeine pills with a half glass of water in the morning -- no problems at all and I have no headache. |
