I'm slowly making my way through some edgic ratings, but wanted to comment on Evil Russel question. To me, what stands out is the close-up on "outwit outplay" during his night time antics. How easy (and how expected) would it have been for that close-up to be a rat or a snake or any other menacing island fauna? I think we are being told that he is not one note, that he's a force to be reckon with. Which sucks because he makes my skin crawl. He gets CP from me . . . I might even be willing to sacrifice the NN (since I do kind of agree with the logic that NN = OTT) and make him CPN? Emptying everyone's canteen and lying about hurricane Katrina are about as negative as it comes, but maybe we are supposed to feel a smidge of admiration because he didn't get caught and most everyone believes him.
Leadership was certainly the "theme" of the episode and the scene where Mick is observing ER and Marisa could be read as Mick, the chosen leader, is taking a backseat to ER, the actual leader of the tribe for better or worse.
Betsy is, without a doubt, CPP for me. She tells us she doesn't trust ER and offers her experience as a cop coupled with women's intuition as justification for it. However, I'm not ready to jump on the Betsy as a potential winner bandwagon. She had such a good first edit, that I immediately suspect we're being set up for a heartbreak. Her edit was designed to make us root for her . . . I'm trying to think of who it reminds me of? Cirie, maybe? Someone that certainly has some skills and isn't a sweetheart in the "make my teeth hurt" traditional sort of sense, but who is going to ultimately have a heartbreaking fall.
Shambo is another question mark for me. I found her annoying but I don't know if I was supposed to. She certainly took up a lot of space for be so meaningless to action of the episode.
